MAPLE LEAF AWARD PRESENTED ON APRIL 22, 2013
Tom Kelly served as a Park and Recreation Commission member from 2002 to 2013. A
long -time resident of Chanhassen, Tom brought with him a true passion and dedication to serve
his community and fellow citizens. Tom was not just a commissioner; he was a participant and
leader in nearly all of the activities and programs sponsored by the Park and Recreation
Commission. Young at heart and blessed with boundless energy, Tom eagerly volunteered to
do the heavy lifting on dozens of projects, big and small, throughout his twelve years of service.
Tom was considerate to all and welcomed the input and assistance of others in order to better
accomplish the task at hand.
During his tenure, Tom volunteered hundreds of hours to work at all of the department's
special events including the 4 of July Celebration, Halloween Party, February Festival, and
Easter Egg Candy Hunt. Tom excelled at 4`' of July and February Festival prize board duties.
Tom actively supported the creation of new recreation offerings including the establishment of
the Rec Center Sports Program, Minnewashta Off -Leash Dog Park, Chanhassen Red. Birds
Baseball Team, and newly remodeled skate park. Tom chaired the effort to establish an annual
bike ride tour of the city for elected and appointed officials.
Tom was undeterred when. the city's - first disc golf course proposal failed to gain
approval.. He quickly assembled a talented group of disc golf course advocates and crafted a
second and even better disc golf course plan for the community. The new Bandimere Disc Golf
Course opened to the public in May of 2012! Looking for his next project, Tom went on to
form the area's first Youth Ultimate Frisbee League open to all 5th through 8 graders.
Tom was a big supporter of the Dave Huffman Memorial 5K run and chaired the effort to
incorporate a Kids Fun Run into the event. Pioneer Pass Park and Riley Ridge Park were
acquired with Tom's help. These new neighborhood parks will serve hundreds of families in
the community starting this year. Tom also played a key role in the expansion of Bandimere
Community Park and the expansion of the city's trail network.
The unique thing about Tom Kelly is his commitment to a new idea — Tom just didn't
dream up good ideas, he followed them through. It is with great pleasure that we honor Tom
Kelly, retiring Park and Recreation Commissioner, with a Chanhassen Maple Leaf Award.
