Attached is a letter from the City's consultant engineer, Mr. Scott Harri of Van Doren Hazard Stallings,`"summarizing the bid tabulation for this project. As indicated in Mr. Harri's letter, 1 • the City received five bids for this project ranging from $69, 442 .50 to $107, 111.35. The low bid was submitted by S.M. Hentges & Sons, Inc. of Shakopee, Minnesota who has in the past satisfactorily completed work in the City. Their bid is 1 approximately 10% lower than the engineer's estimate. It is therefore recommended that Project No.. 90-9 be awarded to S.M. Hentges & Sons in the amount of $69,442 .50 contingent upon I receiving concurrence from the State of Minnesota on the bid tabulations. Iktm/jms Attachments: 1. Tabulation of Bids. 2. Five bids II were received on September 17, 1991 and ranged from a low bid of $69,442.50 to a high of $107,111.35. The estimate for the work is $75,294.20. The low bid is 10% below the estimate and represents II a good bid for the City. __ _._.. The low bidder is S.M. Hentges & Sons, Inc. of Shakopee, Minnesota. They have been in business for 15 years and have averaged five II million dollars per year in construction contracts the past three years. Their main business practice is sewer and watermain pipe construction and grading. Street paving, concrete curb and gutter I and restoration are handled through subcontractors. This project is a good match for them. Our reference checking has revealed that S.M. Hentges work is found I to be satisfactory and that they have the proper equipment to complete this project. Hentges constructed the Lake Lucy Road watermain project a few years ago in Chanhassen. The work on that I project was completed satisfactorily. In' addition, we have been informed that Hentges has occasionally been slow to clean-up projects and inefficient in coordinating their subcontractors. These are problems common to most contractors and we do not feel that is a reason not to award them the contract. Hentges is prepared to begin the project immediately following award. Based upon our findings, we recommend the City of Chanhassen award I P g Y the bid to S.M. Hentges & Sons, Inc. in the amount of $69,442.50. Sincerely, 1 VAN DOREN-HAZARD-STALLINGS, INC.
