Whether you are contacted by phone or e-mail, protect yourself from these scams by following one simple rule.., never give out personal information to anyone contacting you, no matter how convincing or legitimate it may seem. Legitimate companies will not contact you asking for your personal information. If it's a company you already conduct business with, they don't need to ask .... they already have your personal information. Following is a summary of the recent credit card scare: You receive a phone call from someone claiming to be a fraud investigator with a major credit card company stating that he/she is concerned that an unauthorized purchase was made with your card. The caller asks if you recently made a particular purchase from a company based out of Arizona (or it could be from anywhere). Once you state "no", the caller advises that your card was fi'audulently used and the credit card company will remove the unauthorized purchase from your account, but the credit may not appear on your statement for a month or two. The caller gives you with a fictitious case number and provides additional (convincing) instructions. The caller states that he/she needs to verify that you are in possession of your card and instructs you to look for the security number printed on your card. The caller reads off a portion of your account number (again to gain your trust) and then asks you to read oft' your security number to prove that you are in possession of your card and that it was not stolen. Once the caller obtains your security number he/she has al__ll of the information needed fi'om your account to make fraudulent purchases, either on-line or by phone. There may be variations of this scam, but the bottom line is that the callers are tricking card holders into disclosing their credit card security numbers. Be aware that many scare artists are good at what they do and are capable of deceiving intelligent and educated people. Beth Hoiseth Chanhassen Crime Prevention 952-227-1610 Olson, Jim From: Sent: Subject: Hoiseth, Beth Thursday, January 15, 2004 3:11 PM Chanhassen Business Watch - Crime Activity Notice Attention Business Watch Members: The Chanhassen Crime Prevention Division and the Carver County Sheriff's Office would like to make retailers aware of the following incidents that recently occurred in Chanhassen. Robbery On January 12, 2004, at approximately 5:15 p.m., a strong-arm robbery (purse snatching) occurred in the City of Chanhassen. The female victim was near a store entrance in the West Village Center (Byerly's Mall) when the suspect approached the victim, ripping the purse off her shoulder, The victim was not injured. Suspect Description: 17-20 years, 6'-6'4", 180-200 lbs., wearing a tan coat with a hood. Although this may be an isolated incident, the Chanhassen Crime Prevention Division and Carver County Sheriff's Office are asking that employers advise their staff to be aware of their surroundings and remain alert to and immediately report suspicious activity by calling 9-1-1. Suspicious activity xvould include anyone who appears to be loitering inside or outside of a business. Passing of Counterfeit Bills The passing of counterfeit bills occasionally occurs in our community, with the most recent incident occurring during the week of January 4-10, 2004, at a local hotel. Recommendations: Train employees on how to detect counterfeit bills and review safety and reporting procedures (see attachment below). Detect a counterfeit bill by comparing it to a genuine bill of the same denomination and series. Look for differences - not similarities. Combined with education (see resources below), a counterfeit detection marker is a helpful tool to aid in identifying counterfeit bills and can be purchased at most office supply stores. Free Counterfeit Detection Resources: U.S. Secret Service Website: www.ustreas.gov/usss/know your money.shtml Chanhassen Crime Prevention: Pamphlets and CDs available (e-mail your request). Please contact me if you have any questions or would like to request in-house safety and reporting procedures training.
