PP of Adjustments and Appeals
IIOn February 26, 1990, the staff reported to the City Council that
due to an oversight, reappointments had not been made for the Board
1 of Adjustments and Appeals for the 1990 calendar year. Staff asked
for direction from the City Council. The two non-City Counc1il
members of the Board, Willard Johnson and Carol Watson, have
II verbally requested reappointment. Staff inquired as to whether or
not the position should be advertised. Council directed staff to
draft an advertisement and notice to be placed in the local paper
advertising the positions.
' Staff placed the notice and advertisement in the paper but received
no responses from the public. Therefore, the two currently serving
1 members of the Board are the only applicants for the positions. In
addition, in discussions with Chairman Johnson, it was determined
that an alternate member for the Board also needs to be appointed.
In the past this has occasionally been another City Council member
Iwho was in a position to fill in should a member of the Board be
absent. This position could also be opened to the general public,
but this does not seem possible at this time since we have no
1 additional candidates.
STAFF RECOMMENDATIO
Staff recommends that the City Council consider and appoint two
active and one alternate member to serve on the Board of
Adjustments and Appeals.

SUBJ: Appointments to the Board of Adjustments and Appeals
PROPOSAL/SUMMARY
' During the last meeting of the Board of Adjustments and Appeals,
staff became aware of the fact that members of the Board serve
only 12 month terms and that annual reappointment is necessary.
' It is my understanding that in the previous years , the reappoint-
ments have not been conducted with a great deal of formality.
However, in light of current Council directives in this matter,
' staff is seeking direction as to the reappointment process. The
two non-Council members Carol Watson and Willard Johnson have
indicated that they wish to continue serving on the Board.
Although we have not advertised for the position, staff is not
' aware of applicants desiring the position at this time. In pre-
vious years there was relatively little competition for seats on
the Board.
' Again, staff is seeking Council direction on this matter. We
believe you have two options,, either reappointment of the members
that have requested reappointment or direct staff to advertise
' for the vacancies as was the case with the Planning Commission
recently.
