Phone 934-9191 · Minnewashta Station No. 2 · Phone 474-7094 MEMORANDUM FROM: DATE: SUB J: Todd Gerhardt, City Manager Gregg Geske-Fire Chief Greg Hayes- 1st Assistant Chief Randy Wahl - 2nd Assistant Chief Mark Littfin- Fire Marshal February 18, 2004 Monthly City Council update Fire Department Overview: Staffing is at 37 active and 8 probationary firefighters as of February 10, 2004; allocation is 45 PTEs. We finished January with 62 calls, down 22 from the 84 we had in January 2003. Fire Training: Currently, the fire department has been concentrating on Right To Know and incident Command System training. This training includes presentations and role-playing incident scenarios. Incident Command System training provides for a systematic approach to handling incidents. The dive team has also recently been doing some specialized training. Fire Investigations: On Wednesday, February 11, 2004, at 10:42 pm the fire department responded to a bathroom fire at Lakeview Hills Apartments. The fire was extinguished within one to two minutes. The bathroom sustained fire and smoke damage, while the rest of the apartment had moderate smoke damage. The three residents found accommodations for the night and were back cleaning up the next day. The cause of the fire was a child playing with matches in the bathroom and dropping a burning matchbook into the wastebasket. No injuries were reported. The management company received a phone call from the Chanhassen Fire Marshal to re-install the missing signage for Parking Fire Lanes", improve snowplowing of the fire lane, and towing cars from the fire lane. All were taken care of by the end of the day Todd Gerhardt February 18, 2004 Page 2 Fire Inspections: Most of the restaurants in the city have been inspected or are scheduled to be inspected by the end of the month. No big surprises. For the most part they are in good condition as far as the fire code is concerned. Once restaurant inspections are done, scheduling of strip malls will start. The Powers Ridge Apartments and Villages on The Ponds Apartments are doing well. There are numerous small remodel projects in various stages of construction and completion. Fire Inspector Replacement: Interviews will be starting the week of February 23, 2004 for Greg Hayes' position. The group of candidates was reduced to six. Interviews should take approximately two weeks, and we are hoping to have the individual start sometime in March.
