In the early 1990's, when the Lions were operating a charitable gambling operation, a portion of their proceeds were donated to the City. In 1995, the Lions donated $11,000 to be used for the operation of the new Chanhassen Recreation Center. During that time, a need for ball field lighting on fields #4 and #5 at Lake Ann Park was recognized. The Lions graciously agreed to pledge $98,000 toward the lighting project. The club made an initial contribution of $25,000 and has been contributing funds ever since. Their charitable gambling operation has since been discontinued relinquishing the Lions from their contractual obligation to fulfill their original pledge. However, the Lions remain committed to making contributions towards the ball field lighting project. In 2001, a monument sign was dedicated at Lake Ann Park, officially renaming field # 4 as Lions Field. The Lions Club paid for the monument sign, which cost approximately $4,600. The $4,600 contribution was in addition to the ball field lighting pledge of $98,000. To date, the Lions have contributed over $50,000 of the $98,000 pledged amount. The Lions are here tonight to contribute another $3,000 toward their initial pledge. STAFF RECOMMENDATION It is recommended that the Chanhassen City Council gratefully accept the donation of $3,000 from the Chanhassen Lions Club.
