MEMORANDUM
TO: Don Ashworth, City Manager
FROM: Lori Sietsema, Park and Recreation Coordinator
' DATE: February 7, 1990
SUBJ: Donations to the Park and Recreation Department
The Park and Recreation Department recently received two clona-
l' $6,400 from the Chaska Lions Club and $3 ,264.64 from the
original Chanhassen Jaycees.
The Chaska Lions Club has made many donations to the Chanhassen
Park and Recreation Department. These funds are raised through
charitable gambling located in Chanhassen. This donation brings
the Lions Club's total donations to $67,450.
The original Chanhassen Jaycees group dissolved in 1985. Since
' that time they have had funds accruing interest at the bank.
Recently the group made the decision to close the account and to
donate a portion of the money to the new Jaycees ( $500) and the
remaining $3,264 to the Chanhassen Park and Recreation Department
to purchase a handicapped accessible fishing pier at Lake Ann
Park. The Jaycees raised the funds to help provide youth
recreation facilities at Lake Ann Park. They feel a fishing pier
' will help to promote the new program called "Fishing Partners" .
Recommendation
' It is the recommendation of this office to accept the donations
and to authorize staff to write a letter of thanks to each orga-
nization.
' Manager' s Comments : In the last week there have been numerous
articles regarding charitable gambling. Although some of the
businesses that sell pull tabs for the Lions Club may be plagued
with some of the same "tip offs" , thefts, etc. , I feel very com-
fortable that the Lions themselves are doing an excellent job in
returning dollars for charitable purposes to the communities from
which they came (not required by state law) . Some of the
articles from this past week relayed exorbitant administrative
fees by clubs, questionable usage of these dollars for

parking/club house repairs , etc. By contrast, the Lions have
' continuously returned 100% of the dollars they raised back to the
community. Approximately one-half of the receipts are returned
to the local Park and Recreation Department. The other half of
the receipts are paid to the school district endowment fund
' (grants to students) .
