SUBJ: Letters Of Intent Not To Seek Re-employment To The Public
1 Safety Commission
Please find attached a letter from Public Safety Commissioners
1 Dick Wing and Candy Takkunen indicating their intent not to seek
reappointment for another two year term. Commissioners Bernh-
jelm, Takkunen and Wing appointments expired as of December 31,
II 1989. Commissioner Bernhjelm indicated his desire to be reap-
pointed, which assuming that he is reappointed then would leave
two empty slots to fill on the Commission. We are in the process
of soliciting applicants at this time by way of newspaper notifi-
IIcation, and we anticipate having a pool of applicants to present
to the Public Safety Commission at their next regularly scheduled
meeting on February 8, 1990.
IManager' s Comments: Typically plaques are prepared and
presented to long term commissioners. Staff will proceed to
I order such for Candy and Dick unless the Council directs
otherwise.

Dear Chanhassen City Council,
Nine years ago it was my pleasure to accept an
' invitation by the mayor to serve on a study group on police
service in the city of Chanhassen. That experience allowed
me to experience democracy, participatory democracy, at its
' best. It allowed me to understand the responsibilities
which go along with good citizenship. Since that time I
•
have served continuously on the Commission which that study
recommended be established. My present term expires at the
end of December and I wish to inform you that I will not be
seeking re-appointment to the Public Safety Commission.
I want to thank you for the opportunity to serve
' Chanhassen in the past and I commend each of you for your
devotion to service in the community. Cities and citizens
grow stronger with increased involvement by everyone. I L
' have gained so much by listening to new information and
hearing a variety of opinions. I hope you will continue to
offer citizens many such opportunities in the future.
' Sincerely,

Dear Candy,
It is with mixed feelings that I pass your letter of intent not to I
seek reappointment to the Public Safety Commission on to the City
Council. I have grown to appreciate your clear-headed thinking and
common sense when presented with `ery complex and controversial
public safety issues. Your partpation on the Public Safety
Commission allowed for a free f].owf ideas and suggestions that
may have not been what we always: wanted to hear but nonetheless was
I
a very well thought out and in€ irmedposition.
Because of your input and shaking of Ideas, I can honestly say
that Public Safety in Chanhas en is in :.a better position to offer I
the services needed by a grp°wing department. Your experience on
the Commission will be missed, but I knz!w your numerous talents
will offer other boardsd commissions" he opportunities that
I
you have for so many years offered the Public Safety Commission.
I hope you will stay, 1n touch and when st sky situations or
I
issues arise you wof not mind me calling ou to seek out your
comments and opinions. Good luck in .y ture endeavors, and
once again, than'k i ` gRario`r 'me, thoughts and
troubles these past . atit- °ri? I

' Mr. Don Ashworth
Chanhassen City Manager

Chanhassen, Minnesota 55317 December 26, 1989
Mr. Ashworth:
At your convenience, I would ask you to convey to the Chanhassen City
Council my intent not to seek another term on the city 's Public Safety
' Commission and to retire from the commission at the end of my current
appointment , on December 31 , 1989.
Since my participation, on the original "Police Study Committee" in
1980 and for many years thereafter , as a member and chairman of the
Public Safety Commission, I have felt honored and proud to have served
the city in this capacity.
' It is therefore, with some regret and disappointment, that I find
myself leaving the commission with feelings of distrust and
' frustration learned over the length of my last term.
My regards and best wishes to you in the coming year.
Sincerely
Richard Wing
