Dear v:
As you are aware, I have taken an active role in the Drug Awareness Program as
well as the efforts of our Carmunity Youth Task Force. As Mayor of our con-
' munity, I would like to call upon you to help. So that I can obtain your input,
I am calling a meeting of the clergy in Chanhassen for March 6, 1990 at 1:30
p.m. at Chanhassen City Hall (courtyard conference roan). The purpose of the
' meeting will be to discuss the current status of the Drug Awareness Program as
well as the status of the Youth Development Task Force. Our Public Safety
Director, Jim Chaffee, in conjunction with myself will present the status of the
Drug Awareness Program, with Margie Karjalahti presenting efforts of the Youth
' Development Task Force.
Although both of these programs are currently in place, they are both in their
infancy. The only way that these programs can be successful is if they are
molded into programs which can truly work and which have broad-based support.
Given your knowledge of our community and its citizens, you represent a very
' valuable asset which we need to draw upon if our efforts are to be successful.
I hope to see you on March 6th. If you are unable to attend, I would appreciate
your contacting either Karen Engelhardt or Jim Chaffee at 937-1900. As noted
' above, your input is desperately needed and, if you cannot attend, we will need
to find another means by which that input can be achieved.
Thank you again.
Sincerely,
1
Donald J. Chmiel
Mayor

Note: The meeting referred to above did occur on March 6, 1990
' and was well attended. The format for these types of
meetings has become more or less standardized, i.e.
presentations are made by Public Safety/Southwest Drug
' Task Force members followed by a presentation by our
Youth Development Coordinator - Margie Karjalahti. The
minister's presentation was very similar to that which
had occurred at the Chamber of Commerce on February 27,
1990. Both programs appear to be well received. There
is an additional benefit in that my role is minimized
with staff/community representatives being the presenters
' for and in behalf of the Mayor and City Council.
