The safety concerns along the corridor have brought more attention to this
corridor and interest in making improvements to the corridor. Chanhassen, Eden
Park & Recreation
Prairie and MnDOT conducted a mini - corridor safety study in 2012 which

showed the corridor needs improvements but in order to make major safety

improvements, the corridor would need to be reconstructed and built to today's

design standards. The study also showed the corridor is relatively safe when

compared with other similar corridors in the metro area. The intersections of

Carver County and Hennepin County currently have a 4 -lane roadway section identified in their
comprehensive plan for this corridor. Carver County is planning to rerun their 2030 traffic
model forecast to see if a 4 -lane design section is still necessary based on current and projected
traffic. The traffic model update should be completed by the end of November.
Hennepin County and the City of Minnetonka are planning to reconstruct the section of County
Road 101 from County Road 62 to Hutchins Drive starting in 2015. This project is also a
MnDOT tumback to the County. This section of 101 has similar safety and geometric problems
to the section of 101 north of TH 5 to Pleasant View Road. The 2035 projected traffic for
County Road 101 is 18,400 vehicles per day (VPD) with an estimated 2% growth rate per year.
The proposed section of this segment of Highway 101 is a 3 -lane design. More information on
this project can be found on City of Minnetonka's website.
Depending on what Carver County's traffic model forecasts show, it may be advisable to
organize a meeting between the local agencies and MnDOT to see if there is any interest in
completing a more refined traffic model forecast and initiate a scoping study, similar to the TH
101 study completed in 2007 from Lyman Boulevard to the Scott County line.
No funding is programmed in the foreseeable future by MnDOT for improvements to this
corridor. However, by completing a scoping study and identifying what improvements could
take place, it would help local residents plan for future improvements. Also by completing a
study it would allow agencies to seek out additional funding sources.
