Monthly City Council update
Fire Department Overview:
Staffing is at 38 active firefighters as of April 15, 2004, allocation is 45 PTE's.
As of April 1 Ith, we are at 15 calls for the month, down from 28 in 2003. We are at 166 calls for
the year, down 72 from the 238 we had at the same time last year. We had one working structure
fire on Monday, April 5th.
An ISO (Insurance Service Organization) audit was conducted on April 13th in our city. Results
will be given to us in about six months. An ISO company gives an insurance rating based on fire
department personnel, training, equipment, response time, etc. Currently, the city's rating is 5;
however, it is our hope that the audit will reduce our rating, which will result in a favorable
insurance savings for residents and business owners.
Fire Training:
The fire department has been concentrating on preparing the apparatus for our ISO audit and
rescue training. This training includes practice at medical stations with backboarding,
defibrillators, and rescue breathing. Specialized training also has been done recently for
hazardous material response. The rookies have finished Firefighter I class and will be taking the
state certification exams shortly. Also this month, rescue skills will be reviewed and a refresher
class on fire behavior will be taught. All new firefighters will attend live burn training in
Minneapolis.

Fire Investigations:
On Monday, April 5, 2004, at 9:35 p.m., the fire department responded to a structure fire at
8024 Cheyenne Avenue. The fire was extinguished in a matter of minutes. Fire damage was
limited to the front porch and a section of the front wall and a portion of the garage. The interior
sustained heavy smoke damage. Cause of the fire was determined to be careless cigarette
smoking. No injuries were reported and the home is uninhabitable at this time.
Fire Inspections:
Inspections are coming along well and were completed at Powers Ridge Apartments,
Presbyterian Homes, The Huntington Learning Center, as well as other smaller projects. No
problems have been encountered. Ed Coppersmith has been going along and assisting with these
inspections.
