TH 5 Expansion
The Southwest Corridor Transportation Coalition (SWCTC) is working on
advancing improvements along the TH 5 Corridor from TH 41 to TH 212. Carver
County will be giving a presentation on the perceived needs of the corridor at the
next SWCTC meeting on May 21, 2004. The purpose of this needs review is to
advance the project as much as possible. MnDOT is currently updating the
roadway improvement plan. By presenting this information to MnDOT in an
organized and group effort, the intent is to get the project programmed.
The City of Chanhassen segment of this corridor is approximately 1.2 miles. The
Minnesota Landscape Arboretum is the only property owner on the on the south
side of TH 5 in this corridor. Three roadways access TH 5 on the north side of
the roadway. Currently, this roadway is two lane with a striped left turn lane for
the Arboretum entrance on westbound TH 5. Traffic demands on this corridor are
currently 21,000 ADT. Future development west in the cities of Victoria and
Waconia will significantly increase the travel demand in the corridor. The current
and future expansion of the Minnesota Arboretum with proposed alternative
access points will necessitate changes on TH 5.
Staff has reviewed the current and future needs of the corridor and has identified
several perceived needs. The perceived needs have not been document by any
traffic study, but are only anticipated needs based on known development within
the corridor and current traffic demands. The corridor should be expanded to four
lanes with turn lanes at all major intersections. Signals should be installed at the
intersections at Minnewashta Parkway and Crimson Bay Road. Access should be
limited to these intersections. Two left turn lanes on eastbound TH 5 should be
constructed at the intersection of TH 41. Wider and paved shoulders should be
constructed.
These are the perceived needs identified by City staff. This information will be
passed on to the Carver County to be included in the May 21, 2005 SWCTC
presentation. Any changes or additions to the perceived needs Council wants
included will be passed on to the county along with staff's recommendations.
