Award of Bid for Infiltration/Inflow Drainage Improvement
Project No. 98-2
The Infiltration/Inflow Drainage Improvement Project will construct drainage
improvements in the Near Mountain, Saddlebrook, Chanhassen Hills and Chaparral
neighborhoods. The bid opening for the project was held on June 7, 1999 at 10:00
a.m. A total of five bids were received ranging from a low of $173,846.50 to a
high of $329, 031.25. Although the difference between the low and high bid is
substantial ($155,000), it is noted that the second low bid is only $16,000 above
the low bid. Staff believes th~ wide range in bid prices received is reflective of the
unique nature of the project and also the late bidding date as the majority of
contractors have already committed to other projects for the construction season.
The engineer's estimate for the project was $185,000 which was identified to be
funded through the 1999 Surface Water Management Program budget. Funds
were budgeted in 1998 ($50,000) and also in 1999 ($125,000) to pay for this
project.
The installation of drainage improvements to provide a permanent outlet for
residential sump pump discharge not only benefits the community, insuring the
sump pump discharge remains out of the sanitary sewer system, but also prolongs
the life of city streets. Therefore, it is recommended the City Council formally
award the contract for the Infiltration/Inflow Drainage Improvement Project No.
98-2 to the low bidder, Wickenhauser Excavating, in the amount of $173, 846.50.
