MN/DOT STARTS NEW "SEE ORANGE" WORK ZONE SAFETY CAMPAIGN
MAY 1 1999
ENGINEERING DEPT.
St. Paul, Minn.--In order to improve safety in highway work zones the Minnesota
Department of Transportation (Mn/DOT) launches "See Orange. We're in The Work
Zone Together" campaign. Raising public awareness about work zone safety is always a
top priority for Mn/DOT as the construction and maintenance season begins.
The "See Orang~' campaign employs radio and TV spots, newspaper ads,
billboards and other media to help motorists equate the color orange with a heightened
need for caution in highway work zones. Drivers need to "See Orange" whether the
color is on a vehicle, a barricade or cone or most critically, the vest and other safety
gear worn by highway workers.
In the last 10 years, 98% of all work zone fatalities were the motorists. That's
why Mn/DOT wants to better education travelers to the dangers that exists in work
zones.
In Minnesota, vehicle travel increases by more than 20 percent during the spring
and summer months. This coincides with Mn/DOT's major construction projects and
maintenance operations. Combined the two factors can create an extremely dangerous
situation for both workers and the motorists.
Mn/DOT places a high priority on the safety of its workers and motorists. Here
are some tips when traveling through a work zone:
· Plan ahead. Become aware of work zones along your route°
· Consider using an alternate route to avoid a work zone.
· Be alert. Follow traffic signs and observe speed limits. Remember, fines double in
work zones.
· Watch for workers and their equipment.
· Follow vehicles at a safe distance.
Up-to-date construction information is available through Mn/DOT's internet Web
address: www.dot.state.mn.us or by using the 24 hour road information telephone line:
1-800-542-0220.

Jan Lash, Chairperson
Chanhassen Park and Recreation Commission
City of Chanhassen
690 Coulter Drive
Chanhassen, MN 55317
Dear Jan and all Commission Members:
I'm sorry I missed the farewell party at the May meeting. The siren call of the theatre
lured me away once again. (How do you like that phrase, Fred?)
I just want to say that it made me very proud to serve on the Commission with all of you.
It's good to know that Chanhassen has a group of people such as you and all of the Park
and Recreation staff members who are so dedicated and concerned, and who work so
hard for the enjoyment of all of our City residents. You are very special people, and
Chanhassen is very fortunate to have you.
I hope I have contributed something over the six years I served. I know that I gained
very much just from being with you Commission members and the Park and Rec staff.
Be sure to let me know if there is anything I can do for you, or with you, in the coming
years. I've been in Chanhassen for nearly 66 years, and I guess I'll stay around town for
a while yet.
Again, thank all of you for the good times we had together.
Sincerely, ,..-.,
Ron Roeser

Re=. Tobacco Compliance Checks
The Shedffs Office recently conducted state mandated tobacco compliance checks of the retailers in
your city/township. I am pleased to let you know that out of 65 retailers in the county, three received
citations for tobacco violations.
We are very proud of our licensed tobacco businesses for training their employees in the importance of
this issue. Together, we can "make a difference" in the lives of our young people.
