CHANHASSEN CITY COUNCIL WORK SESSION
SEPTEMBER 13, 2004
COUNCIL PRESENT:
Mayor Furlong, Council Members Ayotte, Lundquist, and
Peterson
COUNCIL ABSENT:
Councilman Labatt
STAFF PRESENT:
Todd Gerhardt, Justin Miller, Kate Aanenson
JOINT MEETING WITH THE ENVIRONMENTAL COMMISSION:
Commissioners present: Dotti Shay, Jo Mueller, and Kim Grant
The commission expressed their appreciation of the Council’s support and went over
projects that have been undertaken in the past year. Some of these projects include
continued publicizing of the Environmental Center coupons, participating in the Fourth of
July parade, and Chanhassen Day at the Arboretum. In the next year, the commission
would like to increase awareness of National Recycling Day. Council and the
commission also discussed green space preservation options for southerly Chanhassen,
especially in the 2005 MUSA area. The topic of a single waste hauler was also
discussed, and the Environmental Commission agreed to provide the Council with pros
and cons of going to a single source provider.
JOINT MEETING WITH THE PLANNING COMMISSION:
Commissioners present: Uli Sacchet, Bethany Tjornhom, Rich Slagle, Craig
Claybaugh, Dan Keefe, Steve Lillehaug
Uli Sacchet began the meeting by asking the Council how they would like the
commission to address issues which may technically be against code, but for pragmatic
reasons should be approved. Examples were uplighting at Lifetime Fitness and retaining
walls. The council stated that each issue was different, but in most cases, if it is a small
issue and there is no resistance from affected property owners or neighbors, they are
more likely to look at the request in a more favorable position. Mayor Furlong stated that
he valued the commission’s input because he sees them as a good cross-section of the
community at-large. Councilmember Lundquist stated that he has received positive
comments from developers and those who have been through the process. Commissioner
Claybaugh said that the traffic study problem was still an issue, but likes that the
commission is beginning to look at design standards for higher density housing.
Commissioner Lillehaug asked that the commission be involved in the analysis of
feasibility studies to make sure they reflect what the commission approved.
Meeting adjourned at 6:50 p.m.
Prepared by Justin Miller, Assistant to the City Manager
