DATE: October 28,2004 SUBJ: Consider approving Electrical Improvements and quote for Lift Station No.2 Project 01-11C REQUESTED ACTION Approve Electrical Improvements and quote for Lift Station No.2 BACKGROUND On September 24, 2001, the City Council authorized the preparation of a feasibility study to look at improvements to Lift Stations 1,2 and 10. On July 8, 2002, the City Council approved the feasibility study and ordered projects for improvements to Lift Stations 1 and 10. On September 27, 2004, the City Council approved plans and specifications and authorized the advertisement of bids for Lift Station 2 improvements. On October 25,2004 Council awarded a contract for the forcemain pipe improvement portion of the Lift Station #2 improvements. DISCUSSION Approval of the electrical quote is the last item for the improvements to Lift Station No.2. The foreemain project and the electrical work were separated because the electrical components could be quoted out separately from the forcemain work. By separating the two items the city would not incur prime contractor markup for the electrical work. The improvements consist of bring three -phase power lift station 2, installing a panel with telemetry and new pumps. Due to the increased size of the pumps the electrical power will need to be upgraded. Xeel will need to extend power to the lift station. The estimate cost for this work is $10,000. The panel and telemetry unit is consistent with the new panels and telemetry the City is installing on other new lift stations and is consistent with the City's proposed future SCADA improvements system wide. The City is trying to have a consistent unit in the field so City crews only have to be training on one panel unit and the city will only need to stock spare parts for one type of unit. The cost for the panel and telemetry unit is $24,700. The last item needing replacement are the pumps. The pumps are old and should be replaced at this time. Also the pumps are larger then the existing pumps to handle the present and future pumping requirements. Staff recommends approving the Braun Pump quote for $15, 039.20. The City has ABS pumps from Braun Pump at other lift stations which have preformed adequately. The quote from Quality Flow Systems included pump aceessories and installation. The pump aceessories are not required and the installation of the pumps will be done by City crews. The total electrical work which includes bring 3-phase power to the lift station, panel with telemetry and pumps is $49,739.20. The forcemain improvements approved by council on October 25, 2004 was in the amount of $73,048.00. The total cost for this project is $122,787.20. On September 27,2004 background staff estimated the cost of this work to be $130,000. At this time Staff recommends approving the electrical work and quote for pumps from Braun Pump & Controls.
