Monthly City Council update
Fire Department Overview:
Staffing is at 37 active firefighters as of November 15,2004, allocation is 45 PTE's.
As of October 31 st, we are at 473 calls for the year, down 238 from 711 at the same time in 2003.
Since our last report we have not had any large structure fires and we responded to Eden Prairie
one time for mutual aid. The department has prepared for the ice rescue season.
Fire Training:
The past month was extremely busy for the fire department with preparation for the presidential
visit, fire prevention week and the fire department open house. October's training involved
rescue training specializing in geriatric patients and the start of Haz Mat training class that will
run through December. Last month the fire department held its annual open house in conjunction
with the end of National Fire Prevention Week. Both events were very successful with over 700
children attending the fire prevention week activities and close to 1000 visitors to the fire station
open house.
Fire Investigations:
The fire department responded to and investigated two small fires in the last month. A deck fire
at 4198 Red Oak Lane on October 11 was believed to have started from spontaneous
combustion. The other was a small fire at a house under construction at 1989 Topaz Drive. The
cause of the fire is listed as undetermined. The fire department also responded to a couple of
illegal bums for which the deputies issued citations.

November 18. Buildings under construction are Lifetime Fitness, Park Nicollet Clinic, Phase 2
of Summerwood Apartments and numerous smaller remodeling projects. All are moving along
well with no problems.
Fire Education Activities:
Nothing new to report.
