CHANHASSEN VILLAGE COUNCIL MINUTES - November 27, 1970
The special Chanhassen Village Council meeting was held on
November 23, 1970, at 8:00 p.m. in the Chanhassen Elementary School.
It was decided to dispense with all formalities. The following
members were present: Mayor Coulter, Councilmen Bennyhoff, Neils,
Klingelhutz and Pearson.
YOUTH SEMINAR: Steve Wolf gave the opening remarks on the Youth
Seminar.
Barbara Montgomery, President of Hot Line, explained that in it's
first year of existence, Hot Line received over 4,000 calls from
allover the metro area and out of state. This points up a need
for this service and for increased communication between young
people and adults. They have more calls from girls than boys.
More calls from senior high than junior high. About 12% are
drug calls. Drug problems are a product of other basic problems.
Loneliness and depresssion are big problems.
Rev. Dennis Lorenz spent three and one half years as juvenile
court chaplin in the Boston area and had these observations:
1. Problem is communication between teens and parents.
2. Teens want their parents to be what they say.
3. Teens want parents to supervise them~
Rev. Roger Payne of RELATE explained that RELATE is designed to
find out what is needed in the Lake Area and resolve this need.
It is a youth counseling service sponsored by some Lake Area
churches. They want to pull various groups together and offer
advice to implement programs.
Center - Minnetonka House, to be used fo~ youth activities and
possible shelter for runaways. Parents must believe in the
integrity of a place like this~ Pledges of $3.00 a month are
solicited to establish a Minnetonka Center. Three adults and
three students should be present each night and be able to take
responsibility. It should be open seven nights a week.
Teen: Ideas:
1. Want parents to be interested in what they are doing and
their friends.
2. Wants parents to ask.
3. Want to be given a chance to explain their points of view.
4. Want parents to respect their right to be an individual.
5. Want to avoid being put into molds.
6.' Want frank and honest communications between parents and
teens.
7. Want both parents to present a united front.
Teens want parents love and want them to be good listeners. Parents
must develope a sense of being able to read between the lines to
determine what the teens are trying to tell us.
