Arbor Day Proclamation
This year the City of Ch"J1hß8sen is planning its Arbor Day celebration for
Saturday, May 6. On that day, community groups will be cleaning neighborhood
parks and planting trees and shrubs by Bluff Creek in the morning. Everyone will
gather back at City Hall for a thank you luncheon at II a.m. At noon the event
will expand its activities to include gardening, government and environmental
exhibitors, a presentation by Animal Productions and other wildlife on display in
the lower level of city hall. In order to properly recognize the day, I am requesting
that the City Council pass the attached proclamation concerning Arbor Day.
Arbor Day Schedule:
9am-llam
Adopt-A-Park
cleàn-up at neighborhood parks by local community groups
Pillsbury Co. planting trees and shrubs along Bluff Creek
11 am - Noon
Thank you luncheon for park clean-up and planting groups at City Hall
Noon - 3 p.m. City Hall
Presentations at 1:00 and 2:00 p.m. by Animal Productions in City Council Chambers

PROCLAMATION DECLARING SATURDAY, MAY 6 AS ARBOR DAY
WHEREAS, in 1872, J. Sterling Morton proposed to the Nebraska Board of Agriculture that a
special day be set aside for the planting of trees; and
WHEREAS, this holiday, called Arbor Day, was first observed with the planting of more than a
million trees in Nebraska; and
WHEREAS, Arbor Day is now observed throughout the nation and the world; and
WHEREAS, trees can reduce the erosion of our precious topsoil by wind and water, cut heating and
cooling costs, moderate the temperature, clean the air, produce oxygen and provide habitat for wildlife; and
WHEREAS, trees are a renewable resource giving us paper, wood for our homes, fuel for our fires
and countless other wood products; and
WHEREAS, trees in our city increase property values, enhance the economic vitality of business
areas, and beautifY our community; and
WHEREAS, trees are a source of joy and spiritual renewal; and
WHEREAS, Chanhassen has been recognized as a Tree City USA by the National Arbor Day
Foundation and desires to continue its tree-planting ways.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Nancy K. Mancino, Mayor of the City ofChanhassen, do hereby proclaim
Saturday, May 6, 2000 as ARBOR DAY in the City of Chanhassen. I urge all citizens to support efforts to
care for our trees and woodlands and to support our city's community forestry program; and further, I urge all
citizens to plant trees to gladden the bearts and promote the well-being of present and future generations.
