MEMORANDUM
TO:
Mayor
City Council
Bruce M. Dejong, Finance Directorr:!iiJ
August 25, 2000
FROM:
DATE:
SUBJ:
Truth in Taxation Hearing Dates
The City of Chanhassen is required by state law to certify a preliminary levy and
proposed budget to Carver and Hennepin Counties by September 15th annually.
Weare also required to establish dates for a truth in taxation hearing and a
continuation hearing, if necessary to allow public input into the budget and tax
levy for the next year.
The Legislature has set aside the first two Mondays of December for cities to use
for the public hearing and continuation date. This works well with our meeting
schedule because December 4 is already scheduled as a work session and
December 13 is available for a continuation hearing and budget adoption. The
time of the hearing may be decided by the City Council. While we have begun
starting our work sessions at 4:30 p.m., but in order to accommodate public input,
I would suggest perhaps moving the time of the hearing to at least 5:30 p.m.
I recommend that the Mayor and City Council adopt December 4, 2000 as the
date for the Truth in Taxation hearing and December 11, 2000 as the date for the
continuation hearing and adoption of the final tax levy for the year 2001 and
authorize me to certify the information to Carver and Hennepin Counties.
