MEMORANDUM
TO:
Scott A. Botcher, City Manager
FROM:

November 27, 2000
DATE:
SUBJ:
Approve Engineering Agreement with Bonestroo Rosene Anderlik
& Associates for 2000 and 2001 Bridg~ Inspections in the City of
Chanhassen - PWI17D
It is recommended that the City Council approve a consultant contract for Annual
Bridge Inspection Services for 2000 and 2001 with Bonestroo, Rosene, Anderlik,
& Associates in the amount of$I,064.00.
The City is required to submit inspection reports for its bridges to the Minnesota
Department of Transportation. The City has one bridge that is required to be
inspected annually and two bridges to be inspected bi-annually. The City does
not currently have the expertise to do these inspections in-house.
Based on the small size of the contract, the City requested quotes for a combined
contract for 2000 and 2001. Two quotes were received:
Bonestroo, Rosene,
Anderlik, & Associates
$1,064.00
BRW, Inc.
$2,650.00
Based on these price quotes, Engineering staff recommends appr.oval of a
consultant contract with Bonestroo, Rosene, Anderlik, & Associates in the
amount of$I,064.00 for the 2000 and 2001 bridge inspections.

ENGINEERING ,'JEPT.
We are pleased to offer our engineering services for inspecting the bridges under the City's
jurisdiction. I have previously inspected each of the bridges personally and am familiar with
them. As requested, I have included inspections for bOtll this year (1 bridge) and next year (3
bridges). The estimated time shown is approximate, and we will bill only for the actual time
expended. The hourly rate would be determined by our existing engineering services contract
with the City, which is currently $76.00Ihour. We therefore propose the following services for
your consideration.
Scone Of Services - Year 2000 (Bridge No; 10JOl onlv)
1. Inspection preparation: Download and print the electronic and hard copy bridge data
files, review the data, and review the anticipated inspection requirements.
2. Field inspection: Inspect and document the bridge, verify inventory and element
condition ratings, photograph the bridge, etc. Includes travel time. .
3. Follow up documentation: Update MN/DOT Structure Inventory files and POlllìIS
forms, log photographs, prepare a letter of recommended maintenance or safety actions,
and submit the Certification of Bridge Inspection and updated file data to MN/DOT.
The total estimated time required for the tasks above is 8 hours. At a rate of$76.00Ihour the
total cost is $608.00. Reimbursables (mileage, film, developing, etc.) are additional and are
billed directly at cost.
Scone Of Services - Year 2001 (Bridl!e Nos. 10J01. 10509 & L4652)
Services for the Year 200 I inspection would be similar to those described above, but would
include all 3 of the City's bridges. The total estimated tim.: required is 14 hours. At a rate of
$76.00/hour the total cost is $1.064.00. Again, reimbursable. are additional.
Please note that other tasks, such as load rating bridges, installing and monitoring crack
movement indicators or other devices, etc. are not included 1:1 the above, and would be
considered additional. We c.an provide these services as well, with prior approval, at the same
rate.

RE: Proposal for Inspection of Bridges for State Aid Reporting
Dear Mr. Remer:
The following proposal is offered for your consideration for the field inspection of bridges within
the City of Chanhassen and subsequent preparation of findings report to be submitted to
MnDOT. Based upon our recent phone conversations, we understand that one bridge will
require inspection this year and three bridges will require inspection next year. We estimate
approximately 6 - 8 hours of structural engineer staff time per bridge including the field work
and report preparation.
2000 Inspection and Report (hourly, not to exceed)
$600.00
2001 Inspection and Report (hourly, not to exceed)
$2,000.00
It is estimated that reimbursable expenses in the amount of approximately $50.00 will be
incurred for mileage.
We, therefore, propose to perform work identified in the scope of services on :mhourly basis for
the total estimated not to exceed amount of $2,650.00.
Thank you for the opportunity to submit this proposal. Please call if you have any questions or
need any additional information.
Sincerely,
