Canvass Results ftoIIi Recount of City Council Race,
November 21, 2000
Upon request of Candidate Mark Senn, a recount of the City Council race was
conducted on Tuesday, November 21, 2000. At the General Election, Mark
Senn received 3,830 votes and Bob Ayotte received 3,879, a 49-vote victory for
challenger Ayotte.
The recount was conducted using the optical scan equipment, with election
judges viewing each ballot before it was fed into the machine. Candidates
and/or their representatives were able to view ballots as judges performed their
duties. Any ballot that judges determined would not be read properly by the
optical scan machine, or any ballot requested by a candidate or their
representative, was set aside for a hand count. This included ballots that were
improperly marked by the voter, but their intent was perfectly clear. Examples
of these types of ballots include 1) if a voter circled a candidate's name instead
of connecting the arrow, 2) if a voter filled in the write-in line but did not
connect the arrow, etc. Forty-one ballots were examined and hand counted, and
all affected parties agreed on the voter's intent. Following the fmal tallies, the
results are as follows:
