As the Council is aware, members of the Senior Needs Task Force were invited to apply for the Senior Commission and notice of the Senior Commission vacancies was placed in I articles in both local newspapers. Of the nine responses staff received, 5 are members of the former Senior Needs Task Force, 2 are new applications from senior citizens residing in the community, while the remaining 2 are non-senior citizen residents II who are both involved in delivery of social services who expressed an interest to participate. 1 The City Council met on Wednesday, November 7th, to canvass the election results. At that meeting, the Council directed staff to prepare a resolution amendment that would have the effect of I limiting the membership on the Senior Commission to residents over 55 years in age. An appropriate amendment is attached. Staff was further directed to bring the applications for appointment back to the City Council on the Consent Agenda with the recommendation that I the 7 applications received from senior citizens be appointed to the Senior Commission. Based upon the foregoing, staff is recommending that the City Council approve the amended resolution I as attached and act to appoint the following individuals to the Senior Commission: I Emma St. John, 1621 W. 63rd Street Selda Heinlein, 420 Chan View Betty Bragg, 1320 Steller Circle Jane Kubitz, 7492 Saratoga Drive 1 Barbara Montgomery, 7017 Dakota Avenue Bernice Billison, 7281 Pontiac Circle Sherol Brooks Howard, 1005 Pontiac Lane II II 1 Senior Commission November 14, 1990 Page 2 If the City Council acts to approve these nominations, staff will inform the applicants of your action in writing and will convene the first meeting of the Senior Commission as soon as possible. Staff would also write to the two non-senior applicants for the commission position informing them that while they were not selected for member, that their participation would be welcomed in ' the future. I 11 I I I i I City of Chanhassen Carver and Hennepin Counties, Minnesota DATE: October 22, 1990 RESOLUTION NO: 90-136 1 MOTION BY: Dimler SECONDED BY: Johnson A RESOLUTION ESTABLISHING A SENIOR COMMISSION WHEREAS, the City Council has undertaken a Senior Needs Study in conjunction with the Senior Needs Task Force; and WHEREAS, the report developed by the Senior Needs Task Force I has identified a large and growing segment of the City's population who are seniors and who have or will have special needs; and WHEREAS, it is believed that the most effective means of developing these issues and city responses while providing information and support for the City Council is to create a Senior Commission. WHEREAS, members of the Senior Commission shall reside in the community and be 55 years of age or older. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City of Chanhassen creates a 7 member Senior Commission comprised of residents over the age of 55 to serve in an advisory capacity and report back to the City Council on matters of importance to our community seniors. Passed and adopted by the Chanhassen City Council this 22nd day of October, 1990. ATTEST: , i Don Ashworth, City Clerk/Manager Donald J. BOX 147 • CHANHASSEN, MINNESOTA 55317 (612) 937-1900 • FAX (612) 937-5739 MEMORANDUM TO: Mayor and City Council ' FROM: Paul Krauss, Planning Director OC.. DATE: November 1, 1990 ' SUBJ: Appointment of Senior Commission ' At a recent meeting, the City Council adopted a resolution creating a seven member Senior Commission. The Senior Commission is charged with providing input to the City Council on matters concerning our ' growing senior community. At your request, I placed notice of openings on the Senior Commission in area newspapers in addition to notifying members of the original Senior Needs Task Force to ascertain which of those members would care to continue on the Senior Commission. At the time of writing, we have seven candidates for the seven positions; however, additional resumes may trickle in between now and the City Council meeting. The 1 prospective candidates represent an interesting cross-section of people who were on the original Senior Citizens Task Force, seniors residing in the community and social service providers for programs for the elderly who happen to reside in the city. If the City Council wishes, you could again contact area churches to see if other candidates are possibly out there. I am asking for the City Council to give me direction in this matter. If in fact we have ' seven candidates for the seven positions, you could invite these to become the Senior Commission, or if you wish we can arrange for you to conduct interviews at an upcoming meeting.
