SUBJ: Well Maintenance Project No. 14 -02: Approve Change Order for Well
#10 Screen Cleaning
PROPOSED MOTION
"The City Council approves the change order of $34,050.00 for Well #10 Screen
Cleaning to be added to Project No. 14 -02 Well Maintenance.
City Council approval requires a simple majority vote of the City Council
present."
BACKGROUND
Well equipment is recommended to be serviced approximately every eight years to
extend the life of the pumps and motors. These projects are necessary to decrease the
likelihood of costly emergency repairs and supply interruptions. City Council
approved Project No. 14 -02 Well Maintenance at the January 13, 2014 meeting.
Project No. 14 -02 Well Maintenance included items to inspect and maintain Well #10
Planning & this year. Well #10 is located at the east end of W. 791h Street. This well was

In order to understand what may be contributing to the drop in pumping yield, the
well was televised. The well was constructed with a screen at the pump intake
because the geology around the open hole was not solid enough to be considered
stable.

Based on the televising results, staff recommends cleaning the pump screen as a part of this year's
well maintenance project to help increase yield. Mineral deposits have built up around the screen
and need to be removed. The screen will be cleaned with a water -safe chemical solution which
breaks down mineral deposits that clog the screen and clog the pores on the rock surface of the well.
The screen will also be cleaned physically with a high - velocity jet and wire brush to remove any
remaining debris.
DOTES
The project was awarded as follows:
'Alternates 1 and 2 were not awarded.
The contract was awarded to Mark J. Traut Wells, Inc., and it included pump rehabilitation and
televising Well #10. Also awarded was Alternate #3 to televise Well No. 10. The base bid amount
was for necessary rehabilitation work at Well # 10. Award of bid was approved on the quotes for
base bid plus alternate #3.
Staff included an Alternate ( #1) in the bid request for cleaning the screen on Well #10. Alternate #1
was not awarded at the time of project approval because staff wanted to see the results of the well
televising before moving forward with cleaning the screen. It was noted in the memorandum for
project approval that Alternates #1 could be added to the project at a later time by change order.
The project was competitively bid by two contractors who completed previous well work projects for
the City of Chanhassen. For Alternate #1, Mark J. Traut Wells, Inc. bid $30,050.00 and E.H. Renner
& Sons, Inc. bid $28,150.00. The bid price has increased due to the type of chemical recommended
for screen cleaning based on the televising information. The quote alternate amount from Mark J.
Traut Wells Inc. is for $34,050.00.
Staff has reviewed these costs and finds them acceptable.
