1d. Hwy 5 Crossroad entry monuments CITY OF - I A 1 4,, CHANHASSEN , 4,4rd . ` 690 COULTER DRIVE • P.O. BOX 147 • CHANHASSEN, MINNESOTA 55317 (612) 937-1900 • FAX(612) 937-5739 IMEMORANDUM TO: Don Ashworth, City Manager IFROM: Gary Warren, City Engineer 1 DATE: May 9 , 1990 SUBJ: Accept Proposal from Barton-Aschman for Trunk Highway 5 Crossroad Entry Monument Design and Construction Observation IProject No. 88-28D 1 The attached proposal dated May 2, 1990 from Barton-Aschman has been prepared in response to the City' s request to incorporate the design comments laid out in the City' s "Highway 101/5 I Preliminary Alignment and Land Use Corridor Study" prepared by The Hoisington Group. This document established a concept for the Trunk Highway 5 corridor from Dell Road to Market Boulevard. I This specific proposal deals with the preparation of construction documents for the abutting quadrants on Trunk Highway 5 at Market Boulevard and Trunk Highway 5 at Great Plains Boulevard. The 1 attached excerpts from the Hoisington report reveal the concept which the City had in mind for this area. I find the attached proposal is very thorough and the City will I experience a distinct advantage and efficiency in coordinating these plans into the MnDOT plans due to Barton-Aschman's current involvement as MnDOT's design engineer on the Trunk Highway 5 I improvements. A separate bid package will be prepared which will not be included in the MnDOT package for irrigation and plantings at these intersections which should provide the City with a quicker timeline for completion of the project and control on Ithis element of the project. MnDOT plans on letting a separate landscape contract for the entire Trunk Highway 5 corridor improvements from Interstate 494 to Chanhassen which probably Iwill not be undertaken until 1992. As noted in the report, Barton-Aschman ' s proposal is based on a I construction cost estimate of $400 ,000 for these improvements and a design/construction observation fee not to exceed $38 ,900 . This project is consistent with the City' s Downtown Redevelopment I Plan and is proposed to be funded from Redevelopment District proceeds. I I Don Ashworth May 9 , 1990 Page 2 In order to incorporate these elements into the Trunk Highway 5 design plans, a tight schedule needs to be adhered to. Construction documents need to be delivered to MnDOT by July, 1990 in order to be incorporated in MnDOT's plan set. It is therefore recommended that the attached Trunk Highway 5 ' Urban Design Improvements proposal dated May 2, 1990 from the firm of Barton-Aschman Associates, Inc. be accepted and Barton-Aschman authorized to proceed with the design as provided ' therein. ktm Attachments: 1.
