Arbor Day Proclamation
Chanhassen's Arbor Day celebration will be held on Saturday, May 4 this year.
During the day, community groups will be cleaning neighborhood parks in the
morning. At 11 am, all volunteer groups will gather at City Hall for a thank you
luncheon. At noon the event will expand its activities to include gardening,
government and environmental exhibitors, a presentation by Creature Encounters,
a home and garden presentation and other wildlife on display in the lower level of
cityhall. In order to properly recognize the day, I am requesting that the City
Council pass the attached proclamation concerning Arbor Day.
Arbor Day Schedule:
9am-llam
Adopt-A-Park
Clean-up at neighborhood parh by local community groups
11 am - Noon
Thank you luncheon for park clean-up and planting groups at City Hall

Staff recommends that the City Council adopt the following motion:
"The City Council adopts the Arbor Day proclamation shown as Exhibit A."

PROCLAMATION DECLARING SATURDAY, MAY 4 AS ARBOR DAY
WHEREAS, in 1872, J. Sterling Morton proposed to the Nebraska Board of Agriculture that a
special day be set aside for the planting of trees; and'
WHEREAS, this holiday, called Arbor Day, was first observed with the planting of more than a
ßÚllion trees in Nebraska; and
WHEREAS, Arbor Day is now observed throughout the nation and the world; and
WHEREAS, trees can reduce the erosion of our precious topsoil by wind and water, cut heating and
cooling costs, moderate the temperature, clean the air, produce oxygen and provide habitat for wildlife; and
WHEREAS, trees are a renewable resource giving us paper, wood for our homes, fuel for our fires
and countless other wood products; and
WHEREAS, trees in our city increase property values, enhance the econoßÚc vitality of business
areas, and beautify our community; and .
WHEREAS, trees are a source of joy and spiritual renewal; and
WHEREAS, Chanhassen has been recognized as a Tree City USA by the National Arbor Day
Foundation and desires to continue its tree-planting ways.
NOW, THEREFORE,!, Nancy K. Mancino, Mayor of the City of Chanhassen, do hereby proclaim
Saturday, May 6, 2000 as ARBOR DAY in the City of Chanhassen. I urge all citizens to support efforts to
care for our trees and woodlands and to support our city's community forestry program; and further, I urge all
citizens to plant trees to gladden the hearts and promote the well-being of present and future generations.
