MEMORANDUM
TO: Don Ashworth, City Manager
' FROM: Jo Ann Olsen, Senior Planner
DATE: October 17, 1989
SUBJ: Appointment to the Southwest Metro Transit Board
The City of Chanhassen has two representatives on the Southwest
Metro Transit Commission, Councilmember Jay Johnson and Dale
Geving. Dale Geving ' s position ends December, 1989 . The Council
must either reappoint Dale Geving to the position or select a new
commissioner. In the past, the Council has taken the position
that the commissioners should be representatives from the City
Council . This is not part of the by-laws for the commission and
' therefore is not a requirement for the appointment to the
Southwest Metro Transit Board.
The Southwest Metro Transit Commission is made up of represen-
tatives from Chanhassen, Eden Prairie, and Chaska. On alternate
years, one of the cities has a third representative. For the
year 1990, Chanhassen will have the third representative on the
Southwest Metro Transit Commission. Therefore, the Council must
select a replacement for Dale Geving ' s position and also a repre-
sentative for a new position.
RECOMMENDATION
Rather than have to designate two additional Council members on
the Southwest Metro Transit Commission, the Council can offer at
least one of the positions to a Chanhassen resident . If this is
Council ' s direction, staff will advertise for an opening on the
Southwest Metro Transit Commission and arrange for the Council to
interview any interested candidates . Should the Council prefer
to have only Council members on the Commission, then the City
Council should nominate two additional Council members to repre-
sent Chanhassen, along with Jay Johnson, for the Southwest Metro
Transit Commission.
