MEMORANDUM

Highway 10 1 Correspondence
Please find attached a copy of correspondence dated September 12, 2000 ITom
the Minnesota Department of Transportation to Reprešentative Tom Workman.
The Council may wish to (but certainly is under no obligation to) have some
discussions this evening as to what this action on the part of MnDOT means to
the City of Chanhassen. Should the City wish to pursue some of the traffic
control improvements considered for Highway 101, there are several issues that
raise their ugly head. Obviously MnDOT would have to give permission for any
improvements to be made to a State highway. Secondly, there is the
philosophical question of why the City of Chanhassen should spend municipal
money on a State highway. Thirdly, there is the very real question of whether or
not we can afford to make these improvements at all.
Again, please understand that no action is required on the part of the City. In
were to give a recommendation to you this evening, it would be that the City
simply receive the correspondence and take no action. There are several
complicating factors present should the Council wish to move ahead with any
particular course of action as it relates to Highway 101. At this time, given the
fact that it is for now and for the foreseeable future a State road, I believe our
best course of action may be to lobby the State to improve the pavement
condition. Now that the turn-back has gone by the wayside, the State does need
to step up and perform this long deferred maintenance.
If you have any questions, please let me know.

De.11' Representative WorlmIan:
In response to your telephone inquiry of thc status of T JI. lOt (re!ctenced above). I offer the
following: .
In recent years Hennepin County bas been petÎormmg routine mair.rcnance of this road at no cost
to MnlDOT. MnlDOT released the portions of the road that lie m. 8i:nnepin County to the
County. Mn/DOT '5 intention is to resume jurisdiC!ÌC!I and mlÙntcn.ance.of this segment of the
road.
As such, the. overall change of jurlsdicrj~ (to the cOllD.tÌ.C$ì is s~pcnded indefinitely. The
roadway will continue to ~ s~wn as a jurlsdicrionallr".m.fc:- cancnaate m our long-range plans.
MnDOT will resume maintenance xesponsib~ty (relieving Hcnney.n Coupty) and reinstate the::
roadway in our pavement pn:servation program for monitoring need of repair.
MnlDOT is reviewing a limited use pemúc n:quest by the City of Chanhasscn for off-road
bicycle trail consttucti.on.. There appears to be sígnifidUlt difficclty with the proposal, but the
revicw is not yet complete. MI1JDOT j.Vî1l deal directly wi:h the City of Chanhassen on this
issue.
Thank YOIl for your continued interest and involvement in iransportation. Your Ic::adeIShip nll3
