A great place to live, work, and play CITY OF CHANHASSEN CARVER AND HENNEPIN COUNTIES, MINNESOTA DATE: RESOLUTION NO: MOTION BY: SECONDED BY: PROCLAMATION DECLARING SATURDAY, MAY 7 AS ARBOR DAY WHEREAS, in 1872, J. Sterling Morton proposed to the Nebraska Board of Agriculture that a special day be set aside for the planting of trees; and WHEREAS, this holiday, called Arbor Day, was first observed with the planting of more than a million trees in Nebraska; and WHEREAS, Arbor Day is now observed throughout the nation and the world; and WHEREAS, trees can reduce the erosion of our precious topsoil by wind and water, cut heating and cooling costs, moderate the temperature, clean the air, produce oxygen and provide habitat for wildlife; and WHEREAS, trees are a renewable resource giving us paper, wood for our homes, fuel for our fires and countless other wood products; and WHEREAS, trees in our city increase property values, enhance the economic vitality of business areas, and beautify our community; and WHEREAS, trees are a source of joy and spiritual renewal; and WHEREAS, Chanhassen has been recognized as a Tree City USA by the National Arbor Day Foundation and desires to continue its tree-planting ways. NOW, THEREFORE, I, Thomas A. Furlong, Mayor of the City of Chanhassen, do hereby proclaim Saturday, May 7, 2005 as ARBOR DAY in the City of Chanhassen. I urge all citizens to support efforts to care for our trees and woodlands and to support our city's community forestry program; and further, 1 urge all citizens to plant trees to gladden the hearts and promote the well-being of present and future generations. Passed and adopted by the Chanhassen City Council this 25'" day April, 2005. ATTEST: Todd Gerhardt, City Manager Thomas A. Furlong, Mayor YES NO ABSENT Invitation to Arbor Dav Celebration C W In 1876 Minnesota became the fourth state to adopt Arbor Day as an annual celebration. Today, Chanhassen sponsors an Arbor Day event each year in order set aside a time to consider what trees do for us and our community. Trees add beauty and character to our neighborhoods, reduce energy costs, increase property values, reduce pollution, and help us replace trees we've lost in our community. Perhaps Elton Trueblood said it best when he wrote, "A man has finally begun to discover the meaning of human life when he plants a tree under which he knows full well he will never sit." Let us plant today, the trees of tomorrow. I invite all area residents, their families and friends to Chanhassen's Arbor Dav event to be held on Saturdav. Mav 7 at the Chanhassen Library and City Center Park. In the morning, volunteer groups will be cleaning local parks and gathering for an appreciation lunch at noon. At 10 am, the community Arbor Day event gets underway with a variety of activities. Jim Gilbert, local naturalist and author will be giving a presentation in the Wilder Room at 10:30 am. Norma Sommerdorf, author of "An Elm Tree and Three Sisters" will read from her book in the Children's Area at 11 am. Free seedlings being given away at the reading. Children's storytelling time will begin following the reading. At 10:30, Woodsy Owl will make an appearance at the library. Carver-Scott Master Gardeners available for gardening consultations near the library entrance from 10 am - noon. Potted spruce trees will be for sale during this time as well. Outside in the Arbor Day tent, kids and adults can plant a sunflower to take home and make birdfeeders for their yards. I encourage everyone to come to this free and fun event. ~
