Monthly City Council update
Fire Department Overview:
Staffing is at 42 active firefighters as of April 10, 2005; allocation is 45 PTEs.
Fire calls are at 140 as of April 10. Last year we were at 166 calls and in 2003 we had 238 calls.
Calls are on the decline for the second year in a row. The few calls we are getting are for an
occasional fire alarm, car accident or medical emergency.
Fire Training:
Fore the month of April, members of the Chanhassen Fire Department were given the National
Incident Management System (NIMS) awareness level class. Also, members of the Fire
Department took state refresher exams for 15t Responder and EMT.
Fire Marshal:
Burning Permits - Currently we are under burning restrictions from the Minnesota DNR. That
means no burning permits will be issued by the Fire Department until things green up. The
exceptions are running field fires, which must have a written variance from the DNR and Chan
Fire. Property owners hire companies that specialize in these types of burns. We get
approximately 6 to 10 requests for running fires each year. Backyard recreation fires ARE
allowed provided they meet the Fire Department's policy which is available on the city's web
site.

Fire Inspections:
The current projects that I reported on last month are continuing with no problems. The building
projects are at various stages of construction with fire sprinkling and fire alarm testing taking
place. Ed and I have begun fire inspections of restaurants. Most appear to be in very good
condition as far as the fire code and housekeeping items are concerned.
Fire Prevention:
Nothing to report.
