WS 2014 05 27 CHANHASSEN CITY COUNCIL WORK SESSION MAY 27, 2014 Mayor Furlong called the meeting to order at 5:15 p.m. COUNCIL MEMBERS PRESENT: Mayor Furlong, Councilman McDonald, Councilwoman Tjornhom, Councilwoman Ernst, and Councilman Laufenburger STAFF PRESENT: Todd Gerhardt, Kate Aanenson, and Sharmeen Al-Jaff SENIOR COMMISSION MEMBERS PRESENT: Chair Barbara Nevin, Carol Buesgens, Tom Wilson, Camille Swanson, Jackie Engel, and Jean Mancini ENVIRONMENTAL COMMISSION MEMBERS PRESENT: Chair Glenn Kaufmann, Vice Chair Amy Oman, and Matt Meyers INTERVIEW APPLICANTS FOR THE PLANNING COMMISSION. Dan Campion and Dave Wanek were interviewed for the Planning Commission appointment. Council members discussed the three interviews from tonight and the previous work session. It was decided to appoint Dan Campion for a 3 year term. JOINT MEETING WITH THE SENIOR COMMISSION. After introductions Mayor Furlong thanked commissioners for their service. Chair Nevins reviewed the commission’s volunteerism and support of city events. Jean Mancini discussed advocating for different forms of transportation opportunities for seniors in Chanhassen and Jackie Engle discussed WeCab transportation which will be coming to Carver County in the future. Council members asked for specific clarification on what is involved with WeCab service. Camille Swanson discussed work being done with the Goddard School in association with the senior center. Carol Buesgens addressed programs associated with allowing people to live independently in their home. She read information provided by David regarding the Store to Door program. Tom Wilson discussed TRIAD program which is a partnership between law enforcement, the community and the senior community in order to keep seniors safe. Councilwoman Ernst asked if information provided to seniors is on the City’s website and if that is a good place to provide that information. JOINT MEETING WITH THE ENVIRONMENTAL COMMISSION. After introductions Mayor Furlong thanked commissioners for their service on the Environmental Commission. Chair Kaufmann discussion the Annual Work Plan which highlights 2013-14 commission accomplishments and 2014 Chanhassen Sustainability Report. He individually discussed the four focus topics of urban forestry, water quality, water conservation and stormwater management details. Councilman Laufenburger asked about the installation of fish ladders. Matt Myers discussed concern with aquifers and water conservation education in Minnesota. Mayor Furlong discussed the stormwater conservation project associated with the lower WYE project and additional education opportunities to raise public awareness. Chair Kaufmann discussed the commission’s four goals and if council was comfortable with their four focus topics. Councilman Laufenburger brought up the Emerald Ash Borer issue which the city will be faced with in the future.
