1 SUBJ: Curbside Recycling
The Metropolitan Council' s Solid Waste Management adopted poll-
1 cies include "processable mixed municipal solid waste shall be
prohibited from landfill disposal in the metro area after 1990" .
The Carver County Solid Waste Master Plan has adopted the
I i Metropolitan Council policies. Carver County' s Solid Waste Plan
has established goals where Chaska and Chanhassen will provide
curbside pickup.
I The City currently provides a recycling drop off center but will
ultimately need to provide curbside pickup to satisfy the Met
Council and Carver County goals. Curbside pickup will provide
Ithe most opportunity for citizens to participate in recycling.
Should the City Council feel curbside pickup of recyclables is a
I service the city should provide, staff is suggesting the
following steps should be taken:
1 . Authorize the Establishment of a Recycling Committee: The
I committee would determine the optimun form of curbside pickup
for Chanhassen, who should perform it and how, etc.
I 2 . Authorize Application for Grant: The grant would provide
monies to research existing conditions, the recycling
market and forms of recycling available. Staff has been in
contact with Carver County and grant monies are
Ilikely.
RECOMMENDATION
IAuthorization to create a recycling committee and to apply for
grant monies is recommended.
