(612) 937-1900 MEMORANDUM 433(22 ITO: Don Ashworth, City Manager - FROM: Gary Warren, City Engineer " IDATE: January 7 , 1988 _ .- ISUBJ: Stormwater Management Plan Acceptance / /a /I7_. --- Public Works File #048 ' ` __. IAs a part of the downtown redevelopment project, the City com- missioned Barr Engineering Company to prepare a stormwater manage- ment plan for the general area north of Lake Susan between IAudubon Road and Rice Marsh Lake and north to West 76th Street, not including the Chanhassen Lakes Business Park area. This is shown on figure #1 of the attached report. IThis report addresses the capacity of existing systems , prelimi- nary design of stormwater storage facilities, preliminary loca- tions and sizing of trunk storm sewers, and the location of Isedimentation facilities to minimize impacts on water quality as urbanization of the watershed area continues. IIdeally, the City should have a document such as this prepared for the entire community. It serves as the basis in providing staff and the council with a document to guide us in preserving and acquiring drainage ponding areas and conveyance areas for Iproperly dealing with stormwater management. Figure #2 of the plan summarizes the key results of the study. I This plan has already been useful in dealing with the sizing of the stormwater retention basin for the downtown redevelopment project and currently is being utilized in working with the I establishment of a stormwater storage area on the east end of the _ study area along the county line between West 78th Street and the railroad tracks . II Since this document serves as the foundation for key decisions relating to land acquisition and ultimate construction of facili- ties, it is appropriate for the City Council to formally adopt I this plan as a guide to be followed for stormwater management within the study area. The Council has budgeted for a similar study to be done in 1988 . These plans will ultimately be II I Don Ashworth January 7 , 1988 - Page 2 ' integrated into the City' s comprehensive watershed management plan to comply with the Chapter 509 requirements of the State. It is therefore recommended that the City Council accept the stormwater management plan as prepared by Barr Engineering dated September, 1987 , and that this plan be adopted as a guide to dealing with stormwater management within the study area.
