MEMORANDUM
TO:

Dave Huffman Memorial 5K Run Route Change
The Park & Recreation Commission reviewed the proposed route change for the
September 10th race at their April 26th meeting. After further review, it was
determined that staff needed to notify the property owners along the route and to
hold a public meeting.
The route change is necessary because of the construction of the water treatment
facility. The construction will close off our previous race route, blocking access
to the pedestrian bridge where the runners previously crossed Highway 5,
The race committee is proposing this route shown on the attached map to
showcase the city's new City Center Park. The new park creates a very nice
venue to host this type of event and meets our department's goal to program this
space. City Center Park is also a good choice because the race can start and
finish at the same location, which will help eliminate expenses with bussing,
signage and labor.
Notices have been sent to all property owners along the route. The notice
communicated the details of the race and that the streets will remain open during
the race. This route change is a very positive thing for the race and the city.
The event will feel brand new again and the city can showcase City Center Park.
RECOMMENDATION
It is staff's recommendation that the Park & Recreation Commission
recommend that the City Council approve the new race route for the Dave
Huffman Memorial 5K Fun Run/Walk as depicted on the attached map.

Ruegemer: Thank you Chair Stolar. The Park and Rec Commission is familiar with this route,
proposed route. We did take a look at that at the April meeting. The proposed route is in place
because of the construction of the water treatment facility over by the pedestrian bridge in
Chanhassen. That construction of that new facility within the city is forcing the race to be
moved because the pedestrian bridge will not be open to have a safe crossover over Highway 5.
This route in particular was reviewed and is being proposed because we can use City Center
Park, our new park and plaza area. It makes sense for the race committee to start and finish at
the same location. We can eliminate the busing and certain make it flow a little bit better for the
race itself. Notification was sent out to the adjacent property owners, whether it be businesses or
residential around the whole route itself. And that went out I believe the 16th of May. A
postcard was sent that had a map. The map that you see up on your screens. That map was
included on that and also then the brief explanation that's included within the staff report was
also on the back side then of that postcard. That was sent out. The only really formal
communication that I did receive was an e-mail that was sent from someone along the race
course that was in favor of it. He saw no problems with it. It's important for the commission to
remember this proposed route, we are not closing are roads. Just basically asking the residents
along the proposed route to be careful during that time. By the time it really hits the
neighborhoods it will be pretty spread out for that. There won't be a real high cluster of the pack
so to speak going through at one time, through the neighborhood so when it's all said and done it
will be less than an hour going through the neighborhoods.
Park and Rec Commission - May 24, 2005
PUBLIC NOTICE: DAVE HUFFMAN MEMORIAL 5K RUN ROUTE CHANGE.
Stolar: Thank you. Do we have anybody in the audience who wishes to comment on this? Any
commission members? Alright, do we have a motion? Oh do you want to comment?
Murphy: I like that route.
Stolar: Oh okay. There you have it. Alright, do we have a motion to accept staff's
recommendation for the change in the Dave Huffman Memorial5K Run/Walk route.
Scharfenberg: So moved.
Murphy: Second.
Stolar: Alright. Well we have a tie here on the second. Moved by Steve and seconded by Ann
and Jack.
Schañenberg moved, Murphy seconded that the Park and Recreation Commission
recommend approval of the route change for the Dave Huffman Memorial 5K Run as
depicted on the attached map. All voted in favor and the motion carried unanimously with
a vote of 6 to O.

Ruegemer, Jerry
Huffman 5k, New Route
Dear Mr. Ruegemer,
please be informed as the resident of 7211 Frontier Trail, which is on the proposed new
race route, that I would be happy to have the race pass by my home.
Further, if race organizers need some off street support/emergency vehicle parking, I
would certainly allow the use of my driveway for that purpose. My address is somewhat
over half way through the race.
As a final thought the race organizers may want to consider contacting Linda Landsmen at
952-906-0636. Linda is the current president of the Sunrise Hills Civic Association. The
Association is the Lake Lot Owner between 7203 & 7207 Frontier Trail, which may provide
another off street staging area for vehicles and staff. Linda would be the best contact
to gain permission from the association membership.
Best of Luck with the Race!
