Chanhassen is a Community for Life - Providing for Today and Planning for Tomorrow Fire Marshal: Fire investigation: The Fire Department responded to 2 building fires in September. The first was on Tuesday, September 16 at 5:51 am. The first arriving unit reported smoke in the building and a working fire in the basement. Crews extinguished the flames in less than 15 minutes and worked another 60 minutes removing smoke from the building and checking for hot spots. A total of 18 firefighters from Chanhassen responded with help from Excelsior, Minnetonka, Victoria and Eden Prairie. We cleared the scene at 9:10 am. The cause of the fire was spontaneous combustion from discarded rags used for staining wood. The second fire was later that evening at 730 Pioneer Trail for a reported barn fire. Upon arrival the 1 St reporting chief observed a pole shed fully involved. Contents of the shed were miscellaneous garden tractors, snow blowers and shop tools. The shed and contents were a total loss. A total of 25 firefighters responded from Chanhassen with mutual aid from Chaska, Victoria, Carver and Eden Prairie Fire Departments. The last units cleared the scene at 9:10 pm. The cause of the fire was believed to be an accumulation of grass /weed clippings pushed up against the hot lawn mower motor /exhaust. A private fire investigator was hired and we are waiting for his final report. Fire Prevention/Education: Fire Prevention and the annual open house were a huge success this year. Twenty seven active and retired Chanhassen firefighters assisted with school fire prevention activities at the fire station. We had over 1,100 children from pre - school, kindergarten, 15f 2nd and 3'd grades visit the fire station and learn various fire prevention messages. The open house on Sunday was also a huge success. Estimates of over 600 people visited the fire station for fun, food, and safety displays. There were a total of 55 active and retired Chanhassen firefighters and spouses volunteering over 380 hours who made this a great event. Fire Inspections: Current projects at various stages of completion include Point office /warehouse, BIG office /warehouse, Great Plains retail center, Southwest Village Town Homes, K. Hovnanian Town Homes, Dakota Retail Center, Next Steps Learning Center addition, Bluff Creek Cottages, and a number of smaller remodeling projects. 80 70 61 60 60 56 50 Chanhassen Fire Department Calls By Month Comparison 72 57 37 40 40 30 20 10 0 11 11 11 January February March 700 650 ,\ 645 600 550 U 0 500 v E Z 450 400 350 300 Years 2010 50 49 50 49 50 46 45 46 41 43 ■ 2013 11 11 11 11 11 11 33 ■ 2014 April May June July August September Chanhassen Fire Department Total Calls by Year- 5 Year Table 67.5] 513 573 640 2011 2012 2013 Projected 2014 25 20 1s 10 5 2 0 Fire Good Intent Call 20% Set Chanhassen Fire Calls by Type September 2014 go Rescue & Hazardous Condition Emergency Medical Service Alarms Res /Comm Service Call Fire 6% 13 Good Intent Call _3 _ li Alarm Calls Chanhassen Fire Department 2014 Year to Date By Call Type Hazardous Condition' 7% Rescue & Emergency Medical Service 42%
