Resolution Proclaiming May 11-15 law enforcement officers CITY OF CHANHASSEN 65k-0 CARVER AND HENNEPIN COUNTIES,MINNESOTA !� DATE: RESOLUTION NO: 2015- MOTION BY: SECONDED BY: RESOLUTION PROCLAIMING MAY 11-15,2015 AS LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS WEEK AND MAY 15,2015 AS PEACE OFFICERS MEMORIAL DAY WHEREAS,in 1962, President John F Kennedy signed a proclamation designating May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which it falls as Law Enforcement Officers Week; and WHEREAS,tens of thousands of law enforcement officers from around the world converge on Washington, DC to participate in a number of events that honor those that have paid the ultimate sacrifice, and WHEREAS,members of the Carver County Sheriffs Office play an essential role in safeguarding the rights and freedom of all the citizens of Chanhassen, WHEREAS, during Law Enforcement Week and throughout the year,the City of Chanhassen recognizes and appreciates the critical contributions and sacrifices made by members of the Carver County Sheriffs Office and honors their courage and dedication. Wednesday,November 28, 1973 Deputy Kalkes worked with the sheriff's office for three years, having been hired as an auxiliary deputy in August 1970 On Wednesday, November 28 at 7 45 pm, Deputies Richard Lura and Deputy Ronald Kalkes were responding to assist Chaska Police As their squad crossed the railroad tracks at the Zemble Street Crossing in Chaska, a westbound train hit the passenger side of the car The train was traveling at 18-20 miles per hour, dragged the car 780 feet, stopping near Crosstown Blvd Deputy Kalkes died at the scene Deputy Kalkes was only 23 years old. Wednesday,November 28, 1973 Deputy Lura worked with the sheriff's office for a year and a half, having being hired as an auxiliary deputy on March 11, 1972 On Wednesday, November 28 at 7.45 pm, Deputies Richard Lura and Deputy Ronald Kalkes were responding to assist Chaska Police As their squad crossed the railroad tracks at the Zemble Street Crossing in Chaska, a westbound train hit the passenger side of the car The train was traveling at 18-20 miles per hour, dragged the car 780 feet, stopping near Crosstown Blvd Deputy Lura was transported to St Francis Hospital in Shakopee where he died at 11 30 pm Deputy Lura was 30 years old. Tuesday, August 2, 1988 1 Deputy Reimann was hired as a part-time deputy in 1969, and was hired to full-time in 1975 He was a patrol deputy for most of his career He worked as an investigator from 1984-1987, but returned to patrol duties a id year prior to this incident On Tuesday 08/02/1988 at 2050 hours, Deputy it Reimann suffered a fatal heart attack while pursuing a motorcycle on County Road 51 near Hamburg. During the chase, Deputy Reimann's -- —- = squad veered off of the road and went into a field, where he was found slumped behind the wheel by responding deputies. The person he was chasing (Patrick J Cornelius) was apprehended a short time later and charged with several counts stemming from the chase, the grand jury declined to indict him for causing Reimann's death
