Name Arthur Burt Lyman
Comments/History Arthur and Evelyn Brackett were married in 1903. Arthur's father, Henry M.
Lyman (a pioneer), lived 1828 to 1902. His mother, Martha Pomeroy, lived 1833
to 1911. Arthur is well known for his introduction and sale of "Grimms Alfalfa" in
the United States. In 1890, the same year he took up "Grimm Alfalfa" seed, Arthur
was a teacher in Dahlgren Township. In 1911, Arthur won a world sweepstakes
for the best alfalfa at the National Corn Show in Columbus, Ohio. In 1915,
$25,000.00 worth of "Lyman's Grimm Alfalfa Seed" was sold, and at no time was
production great enough to meet demand. The seed, which was high in price,
sold for as much as $1.00 per pound. Farmers in North Dakota soon became
interested in "Grimm Alfalfa". As a result, the North Dakota Grimm Alfalfa Seed
Producers Association was incorporated in 1916. Prior to 1924, the focal point for
"Grimm Alfalfa" was always Carver County. It is impossible to compute in dollars
and cents what the "Grimm Alfalfa" has meant to the nation. This selection was
take from "Minnesota History".
