Comments/History The following obituary was published in the Minneapolis Star Tribune:
Harrison Stuart Amos Harrison. Bom 1/21/1912 to James and Nettie Harrison on
the family farm near Chanhassen, MN, joining brothers, Edward, Lynn and
Sherwood. Stuart was not allowed to become a cowboy during a visit to Montana
at the age of 10, instead returned to Minnesota to graduate from Excelsior High
School and then earn his Ph.D. in chemistry at the University of MN. He was an
active member of Alpha Chi Sigma. At the university he met Dorothy Butterwick,
also a student, and they were married Jan. 1, 1940. They moved to Akron, Ohio
where Stuart developed synthetic rubber for B.F. Goodrich during the war years.
Their first three children, Douglas, Dianne and Carol were bom while in Akron.
They returned to Minneapolis in 1946 when Stuart accepted a position as a
research chemist with General Mills. While he worked on polymers and accrued
over 50 patents, their children, now including Barbara and twins Ben (Bennett) and
Sara Robin, delighted in being a test family for such products as Trix and Bugles!
Stuart provided years of adventure for his family, taking them traveling, camping,
canoeing, fishing, etc. Near retirement, Stuart and Dorothy built a lake home next
to the home of life long friends; creating a location for another era of gatherings
and memory making. Stuart and Dorothy shared strong beliefs in respect for the
environment and concern for social justice, both domestic and international,
supporting many non-profit organizations. Stuart passed away peacefully with his
daughters Sara and Barbara at his side. Preceded in death by his beloved wife,
Dorothy; son, Bennett; and son-in-law, Robert Stom. he is survived by son,
Douglas (Barbara); daughters, Dianne Stom, Carol Park (Roger), Barbara Eckley
(John) and Sara Harrison; 10 grandchildren; and 3 great-grandchildren. A
memorial service will be held at a later date. memorials may be made to the
Friends of the Boundary Waters, Nature Conservancy, World Wildlife Fund, or
Amnesty International. Washbum-McReavy Edina Chapel 952-920-3996
