Dorothy Christobel Butterwick Harrison, 88, passed away on April 7 at
the end of a six year struggle with Alzheimer's. She was bom on
December 23, 1914 in Washington, D.C., where her father worked for
the North Dakota Congressman, which may have led to her life long
passion for politics and history. She grew up in Minnewauken, ND,
where she had four friends known as the "gang of five" who were part of her fife
through marriage, child raising and retirement. She married her college sweetheart,
Stuart Harrison, and they had six children. Doug, Dianne, Carol, Barbara, Ben and
Sara were the center of her life from early 1940's. With great sorrow, the family lost
Ben to cancer in 1991, yet she continued to demonstrate her great heart and
strength of character through this tragedy. She was an eternal optimist with
boundless energy. In her forties she returned to the University to earn her masters
degree and became a special education teacher. In her fifties she took up downhill
skiing so she could join family outings. She found adventure with Stuart through
travel to the four comers of the world. Although afraid of water, she learned to swim
so she would easliy live in the land of lakes. She also took great joy in her
grandchildren, James, Kathy, Karen, Jessica, Nick, Katie, Elle, Sally, Paul and Max.
Together, they enjoyed years of treasure hunts and card games at their cabin at
Child Lake. It was that sense of adventure and wonder we'll remember and miss.
And always that spirit of fun and the warmth of her love. A memorial service will be
held at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, 46th St. & Colfax in South Minneapolis on April
27th at 2 PM for family and friends. Washburn-McReavy Edina Chapel 952-920-
