Name George Mayo Powers
Comments/History George was born circa 1827-1828, per the 1857 census. George married Thilena
(Philena or Lena) Powers on Sept. 14, 1855 in Agawam, Massachusetts. The
marriage license lists his father as Morris Powers and Thilena's father as Ralph
White. Thilena passed away 2/9/1870 while giving birth to triplets. In March of
1871, he married Harriet Moore Thompson (per headstone). (See Grave 38.2)
George Powers was a pioneer who came to Minnesota in April of 1853, with the
Northampton Colony from Massachusetts. George was a charter member of the
First Independent Church Excelsior and Chanhassen on 7/17/1853. He served as
church officer in 1866, and church deacon in 1885. In 1855, Carver County
Officers included George Powers, Assessor for District No. 1. In 1856, George
was one of five men chosen to represent Chanhassen Precincts at the Republican
Convention in Minneapolis. On 5/11/1858, Chanhassen held its first town meeting
and election at the Log School House. George Powers presided as clerk. George
may be the only person who continued to record the name of the town as
Chanhassan (spelling with "AN"), as it was originally spelled. In 1861, George
also served as clerk and later one of the trustees of Chanhassen Cemetery
Association. In the 1870's, George also served as a clerk for School District No.
12. George Powers was described by Theodore Bost in April of 1859, (pg. 140 of
the Theodore and Sophie Bost Book, A Frontier Family in Minnesota) as "An
excellent handsome young man, got married last fall (1858), American from New
England, always happy, good Christian, very nice and pleasant. He has been a
school master - exemplary conduct in all respects." When George pre-empted his
land is as yet unknown. We do know that on 10/17/1872, he sold land in Section
31 to Mary Cheesman.
