Name Isaac Bennett
Comments/History Was a pioneer. His children Willis, Orris, Melvin and Harley were all born in New
York. Miriam, Belvia and Nettie were born in Minnesota. In 1854, Issac first
settled at Howard Point, located on the southwest side of Lake Minnetonka. The
family moved to Chanhassen in 1859. Isaac purchased 79 acres of land in
Section 3 on 12/8/1866. Ruth Bennett Wilson Hutton's mother, Miriam Bennett,
was the daughter of Isaac and Ruth Bennett. In "Tributes" published by Excelsior
Historical Society dated 3/3/1975, Ruth Hutton gives the following account: "In
1862, my mother was 6 weeks old at the time of the Indian Scares. I believe the
oldest son, Willis, remained with grandfather. Sons Orris, Melvin and Harley with
grandmother and her six-week old baby (Miriam Julie) left on foot for Big Island.
The boat became caught on a sandbar. Shortly after, a friendly Indian from
Shakopee arrived to advise all the settlers that hostile, unfriendly Indians, have
been stopped en route. Throughout the years my grandparents lived on their
Carver County farm, and the Indians would always stop and visit on their way to
and from Excelsior and Shakopee. My grandmother always gave them some tasty
refreshments, and they became very fond of their "friend" Ruth Bennett. Willis
married Ida Poore on 2/7/1882. Miriam married James A. Wilson circa 1883 or
1884. Orris married Ida Sarver, daughter of William Sarver, on 9/13/1876. Melvin
married Ella Sarver, daughter of William Sarver, on 3/24/1877. Harley married
Cynthia, last name and date unknown. Nettie married James F. Harrison on
6/2/1893. Belvia never married. Issac was the son of Nathan Bennet (1785-1868)
and Betsey Bennett (1794-1869) (See Grave 33.8.)

The Weekly Valley Herald dated March 26, 1914 read:
Isaac Bennett, a well known resident of near Excelsior since 1856, died quite suddenly at
his home in that villager, Friday, March 13, 1914, at the advanced age of 87 years, 10
months, and 23 days. Mr. Bennett, on coming to the Territory in 1856, settled on a farm in
Chanhassen, near Excelsior, which he occupied for more than forty years, before moving
to the Village. He was one of our best known pioneers, sturdy of manhood and took a
prominent part in the early settlement of this part of the State. He was the father of
Melville and Harley Bennett, the well known Excelsior liverymen.
