In "Tributes" published by Excelsior Historical Society dated 3/3/1975, Ruth Hutton gives the following account: "In 1862, my mother was 6 weeks old at the time of the Indian Scares. I believe the oldest son, Willis, remained with grandfather. Sons Orris, Melvin and Harley with grandmother and her six-week old baby (Miriam Julie) left on foot for Big Island. The boat became caught on a sandbar. Shortly after, a friendly Indian from Shakopee arrived to advise all the settlers that hostile, unfriendly Indians, have been stopped en route. Throughout the years my grandparents lived on their Carver County farm, and the Indians would always stop and visit on their way to and from Excelsior and Shakopee. My grandmother always gave them some tasty refreshments, and they became very fond of their "friend" Ruth Bennett. Willis married Ida Poore on 2/7/1882. Miriam married James A. Wilson circa 1883 or 1884. Orris married Ida Sarver, daughter of William Sarver, on 9/13/1876. Melvin married Ella Sarver, daughter of William Sarver, on 3/24/1877.
