Obituary from Weekly Valley Herald 4-29-1909Eli Stone (1835 - 1909) - Find A Grave Memorial Eli Stone Birth: Nov. 30, 1835 Port Allegany McKean County Pennsylvania, USA Death: Apr. 17, 1909 Minneapolis Hennepin County Minnesota, USA Weekly Valley Herald [Chaska, Minnesota], April 29, 1909 DIED-- Eli Stone, at St. Barnabas hospital, Minneapolis, April 17, 1909; at the age of 73 years, 5 months, and 17 days. The deceased was born at Port Alleghany, Pennsylvania, coming to Minnesota in early manhood, he was one of the pioneers of Carver county, and for more than half a century has resided in Chanhassen township. Enlisting in Co. "B," 9th Minnesota Infantry in August 1862, for three years he endured the hardships and dangers of frontier strife and southern battlefields, until the regiment was mustered out in August 1865. Mr. Stone's health had been failing for some time, and after an attack of la grippe several weeks ago it became apparent that an operation was the only means of prolonging life. Cheerfully and eagerly he submitted to this and though the operation was successful and hopes were entertained that his naturally vigorous constitution would triumph, the shock was too great for his enfeebled strength, quietly and peacefully he passed from life to life eternal. A faithful, loving wife, three sons, one daughter, and two brothers mourn the loss of a devoted husband, a tender loving father, and an affectionate brother, whose memory will ever be an inspiration to a better and higher life. The funeral services held at the late residence, Tuesday afternoon, the Rev. Swain, pastor of the Congregational church of Excelsior, of which Mr. Stone had been a faithful and conscientious member for forty-nine years. The Frank W. Halstead Post, of which the deceased was a charter member, took charge of the services at the grave, and with the solemn and impressive ceremonies of the order of the Grand Army of the Republic all that was mortal of their departed comrade was lowered to its last resting place, covered by the folds of the flag he had loved so well and fought to defend.
