Name Henry Marlyn Lyman
Comments/History He was a pioneer. Date of death is listed as 1/4/1902, in Chanhassen, (CCDR),
and listed as 1/14/1902 (CR). Henry Lyman was a charter member of the First
Independent Church Excelsior and Chanhassen in 1853. He is named in the
1850 territorial census. It is believed he first arrived at Chaska and then settled in
Chanhassen on Highway 5 and County Road 117 (Galpin Boulevard today).
Here, he built a cabin of tamarack logs and set about farming in 1852. A deed for
160 acres of land in Section 10, Township 116, Range 23, was recorded
6/29/1858. In 1854, a post office was established in Chanhassen. Henry was the
first postmaster and held the office for two years. The post office was abolished in
1859. In 1858, Henry served on Carver County's first Grand jury. He was a
founding member of the Chanhassen Cemetery Association in 1861. He was also
involved in the State Horticultural Society. He grew orchards of apples, plums,
and developed the Lyman "Prolific Crab Apple." Henry was active in Republican
politics and served as one of five representatives from the Chanhassen Precincts
at the Republican Convention in Minneapolis in 1856. Henry and Martha Clarissa
Pomeroy were married on 4/13/1856 in East Hampton, Massachusetts. Henry
and Martha's son, Albert, started the Lyman Lumber Company, which still exists in
Chanhassen today. Their son, Arthur Burt, introduced "Grimms Alfalfa" to the
United States. Their son, Frank, moved to California and son, Ansel, was killed in
a train accident south of the Lyman Farm. Four children died in infancy between
1863-1874 from scarlet fever, typhoid fever and Cholera. Those children were
George, Grace, Ada and Willie.
His obituary is in the file.
