Sherman and Mary Ann (Staring) Smith were married in Eden Prairie in 1870. Sherman was the owner of a feed store in Chanhassen. In 1898, the family moved to Excelsior. Sherman moved the store to Excelsior on Water Street in 1901. In 1926, groceries were added and daughter, Edna, became a partner. Sherman's son, Charles, was already helping run the business. The store was called the "S & S Grocery" and remained for 50 years. His father, Steven Smith, lived from 1799 to 1880. His mother, Elizabeth Wright, lived from 1809 to 1882.
