Name Sherman Stephen Smith
Comments/History Sherman Smith came to Minnesota in 1865. Sherman and Mary Ann (Staring)
Smith were married in Eden Prairie in 1870. Sherman was the owner of a feed
store in Chanhassen. In 1898, the family moved to Excelsior. Sherman moved
the store to Excelsior on Water Street in 1901. In 1926, groceries were added and
daughter, Edna, became a partner. Sherman's son, Charles, was already helping
run the business. The store was called the "S & S Grocery" and remained for 50
years. His father, Steven Smith, lived from 1799 to 1880. His mother, Elizabeth
Wright, lived from 1809 to 1882.
