Name Herman Luebke
Comments/History Herman Luebke's 1918 World War I draft registration states he was living in
Manitowoc, Wisconsin at age 43 and was employed as a bridge carpenter in
Minneapolis. He lists his next of kin as William Priebe in Minneapolis. Mr. Priebe
is listed as single.
His parents may be Frederick and Caroline Luebke, but we have no verification of
that. We believe his parents were born in Germany.
His obituary was published in the November 23, 1933 edition of the Weekly Valley
Herald and read:
"Brief mention was made in the Herald last week of the passing of Herman
Luebke, which occurred at the family home near Excelsior, November 13, 1933, at
6 o'clock p.m. at the age of 58 years and 25 days. His death came after an illness
of only a few weeks and proved a severe shock to his family and many friends
and acquaintances.
The late Herman Luebke was born near Manitowoc, Wisconsin, where he resided
until his fourteenth year. He attended the local Lutheran school and was
confirmed there by the Rev. R. Pieper on April 28, 1889. In early manhood he
began his career on construction work and conducted crews in railroad and bridge
work for many years being highly regarded as an excellent workman and handler
of men.
On April 14, 1923, he was married to Ella Kelm, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs.
William Kelm, well known residents of Chanhassen Township for many years.
They went to housekeeping in St. Paul, where they resided for four years. They
then moved to Shakopee, where Mr. Luebke had charge of a crew engaged in
work on the bridge spanning the Minnesota River. That same year his twin
brother, Frank, engaged in like work at Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, was
accidentally killed. Following the completion of the Shakopee project, Mr. Luebke
decided to retire from construction work and purchased a few acres just out of
Excelsior, where he passed away.
He was a fine type of man, honest, friendly, courteous. He is survived by his wife
and four brothers and three sisters, namely: Ida Brown, Minnie Buddinger and
Fred and Charles Luebke, Nielsville, Wisconsin, Emil Luebke, De Ridder, LA;
William Luebke, Minneapolis, MN; and Lena Knifel, Everett, Washington. To all
we extend our deepest sympathy in the loss of their husband and brother.
