My ren:ntly acquired first C<lr, a

opened new horizons hcyond the
w;dking limits of Chaska.
With a Novemher wind and
snown;lioa:!; gently mixing, I was
hcaded for what was then Chanhas-
scn Township, more specifiCllly to
that ilrea settled hy "Yankees" in
the I X50s.
At thc Ilcrh I\spden home [ wa<;
going to hecome acquainted with
his mother, Mary Wood A<;pden, a
dl'lightfuJ lady gracefully enjoying
her upper Ms.
She and her family had the
experience of coming from
Mass,l(;husetts to the frontier twice.
Ahel \V(xx.l had worked in the
collon mills of that state sin<.:e
coming from England as il hay.
Learning of new opporrunities in
the new Midwest, he hrought his
family, including two-year-old
Mary, to the Waukesha area of
WisConsin. However, it proved to
he a malariil area. The family went
O;lck east.
Some German families had come
up the Minnesota River in IX52
and pre-empted homesteads on the
prairie and along the hluffs of what
would hcc:ome C:lrver Co:.Jnty, cast
of whal would become Chask:l.
The steamboats Jet them off at il
landing cll/cd Yorkville. During
the following year, 10 families
from MassachuscllS got off ilt the
S;lme place and headed north to
claim land. In the group were Arha
Cleveland, George Powers, H.M.
Lyman, Joshua Moore, J. OtlhClrt,
George Galpin, Lemuel Griffin,
James Ryan, William Tilton and
James Hillery.
A minister t:.1me to visit the
Clevdands amI was so favorahly
impressed with the new Clrea that

left enough money for his family 10

in 1854 and estahl ished a home-
stead. After a year's preparation of
Ihe site, he sent for his familv.
A contingent of 16 SCI out i'rom
Ma~<;achusetts, making lhe first
legs of the trip by railroad. In the
group the Wexx.1s' cousins, Caspar
KnOll, John Ac;pden, and lhe
Hobson, Lynn and MCXlre families.
On one leg of the journey they rtx.le
in a c..1UIe C<lr, just vac;Jted hy
animals. Planks were put in as sealS
for women.
After six days they arrived in
ChiClgo on il Sunday. Trains did
nO[ o~rate on that day. The nexl
day they were back on the rails
headed for GaJcnil, III. There they
got on the ste,lmhoat, Franklin,
hound for St. Paul. There they
hoarded the Antelope nnd reached
the Minnesota River Valley at
Shakopee by nightfall. Knott, a
tinsmith, was impressed with the
selllement at Shakopce and decided
to sct up husines.s there. TIle
Antelope stopped at Yorkville, a
scattering of log homes east of
what wac; to become Chaska. They
were greeted there by Julln Mann, a
sclller. He had been requested 10
take C.1re of the newcomers until
their friends arrived.
Mr. Wood arrived with a lumber
wagon drawn hy a yoke of oxen he
had purchased. Reunited, the W(xx.l
family drove into the nearby
Chaskn settlement, stopped m
David Fullc:r's slore on the levee at
the south end of Walnut Street.
They purchased a harrel of s;lll
pork, a dollar's worth of sugar, a
harrel of nour nnd 11 gallon of
molas.ses. With those purchascs,
the wagon and oxen and a $60 cow,
the Woods had $42.50 left a<; their
weallh. That would he contrihuted
to the cost of a log schex11 neigh-
hors had decided to build. They
could then get education funds
from the territorial government.

prepared papers.

Frank Ess served in Company A of
Fourth Minnesota Regiment until the
s end. During the war he participat-
in twenty two battles, was wounded

urned to his company.
C. B. Terrill, a Chaska attorney
ing the ea~ly years, completed one
in the service and then re-enlisted
ing his second term, he was seriously
lnded in the arm. For a time it was
red the arm would be amputated.
August Klammer lost a leg during
e war. Mustered in on August 27, 1864,
arr~er received his training at Ft.
elling and then was ordered south to
shville. Early one morning during an
gagement, Klammer charged dOt~ a hill
ward the Confederate line t-lhich t...as
g in behind a stone wall. As he neared
e wall, the ball from a musket hit him
attering his knee. The battle waged
st of the day. Finally, when all-was
iet in the late afternoon Klammer's
other, who was also in the unit, went
arching for him on the battlefield.
en found, Klammer was almost dead
om loss of blood, but he w~s hurried
am emergency hospital where his leg
s amputated at the knee.
Hospital conditions were primitive,
d Klammer spent the next several weeks
ying on the straw which served as his
d. Very little care was available.
ilerecovering, he was stricken with
asles, yet somehow he survived. Then
en His leg had healed, he attempted
walk again for the first time. He
11 andso badly hurt the stub, that
other amputation was performed. Klam-

nnesota, and became a familiar figure

Sebastian Einsiedler served in the
uth. One morning he went out to get
pail of water at a nearby creek and
disappeared. It remains on open question
whether he deserted or was killed. His
widow, Theresa, later married anotner
early settler, Lambert Heutmaker.
Ch~ska's doctor, J. A. MacDonald,
entered the service in 1864. Some of
the other military rolls were: Nicholas
Sc~ ~.:nborn, John Boss, fred Ilti~,
Miclvwl Kessler, He:rr:1an B1-~inxhaus,
Engelbert Schneider, John A. Salter,
Henry GObelhei, and Hartin Steng~r.
Jos.~ph Keister served and died at
Vicksburg.
Among the Chanhassen men serving
in the Civil war, either from the north-
west part of the township or who later
moved to Chaska were: John Siems, Johan
Ess, William and James Haxwell, Hilliam
S6hwie, and James Aspden~
Mathias Mason, another veteran of
the Civil War, was ope of the many
Chaskans who did not settle in Chaska
until long after the war was ended.
Mason came in 1872.
As stated earlier, Ba~ter served
with the Minnesota 4th Regiment. The
Fourth participated in campaigns at
Missionary Ridge, Vicksburg,and marched
to the sea with Sherman. Griggs led
Company B of the Minnesota Third Regi-
ment. The Third met a humiliating de-
feat at Murfreesboro, Tennessee, in
July, 1862. After imprisonment some
of- its men were paroled and returned
to fight the Dakota. After the up-
rising was under control, the Third
turned again to the north south battle.
After the defeat of the Third,
Charles Warner wrote a soothing edi-
torial in the Herald. The editorIal,
a comparison of the Third and Fourth,
appeared three months after the Third
had fallen.
It will be remembered that when
a call was made by the Governor for the
Fourth Regim~nt parties desiring to raise
recruits, held out the inducement th3t
the 'fourth' would never be called from
the State and that the Regiment would
