Monthly City Council update
Fire Department Overview:
Staffing is at 42 active firefighters and 7 on probation as of July 15, 2005, allocation is 45 PTEs
As of July 10, we are at 314 calls for the year, up 44 from 270 at the same time in 2004. Since
our last report, we have had one structure fire which was limited to one apartment at Lakeview
Hills Apartments. We also have had a couple of swamp/grass fires as a result of fireworks and
we called upon Victoria for mutual aid for these fires. We took on 7 probationary firefighters
and they will be busy during the next year taking the required classes along with our regular
training.
Fire Training:
This past month the members of the department completed a HazMat (hazardous material)
refresher class. We also practiced water rescue skills at Lake Ann. In addition, the Rescue
Officer presented a class on summertime accidents and heat related injuries.
Fire Marshal:
The Fire Department responded to an apartment fire on Tuesday, June 28th at 12:18 AM. The
fire was contained to one unit which was a total loss. There were no reported injuries. The fire
is still under investigation. A follow-up inspection was done to insure all units had working
smoke detectors, proper fire extinguishers, and clear balcony/exit ways. We also investigated
two porta-potty fires at Lake Susan Park. They were both on Thursday, July 7th. One was at
12:24 AM and the other at 10:51 PM. Evidence was collected but we have no leads. The Fire

Department also responded to a swamp fire on Thursday July 7th. The cause of that fire was kids
playing with fireworks.
Fire Inspections:
Life Time Fitness and Park Nicollet Medical Clinic received their Certificates of Occupancy last
week. Both projects went extremely well with no problems with fire inspections. Goddard
School is close to completion with fire tests being completed in the next couple of weeks. Stone
Creek Town Offices are progressing well. There are currently four buildings under construction.
One is done and footings are being poured on the last building. There are also a number of
smaller remodeling jobs going on as well in the city.
Fire Prevention:
The Fire Department is participating in National Night Out on August 2nd with three fire trucks
visiting a number of neighborhoods. We will also be doing various fire safety programs at
Safety Camp on July 21 st.
