2b Eagle Scout Project, Curry Farms Park

Dear Mayor Furlong and City Council members,
As an Eagle Scout Leadership Service Project, I would like to install a pair of
benches at Curry Farms Park, and plant eight trees around the park as shown on the
attached diagram. As you know, Curry Farms Park recently had an "extreme makeover",
where the old wooden playground equipment was replaced by new plastic and metal
equipment. Our neighborhood's residents volunteered to help put it together. Currently,
there is a large open field surrounding the playground equipment. On the west side of the
field, there is a swampy area. There is only one tree nearby, and this doesn't shade the
playground.
My project will provide several benefits: the trees will help provide more shade as
well as providing a habitat for birds and wildlife. The trees will also add beauty and
possibly some fall color to the park. The benches will allow people to relax while
enjoying the park. The trees will grow up to shade the benches, and parents will have a
good view oftheir children playing.
Here is my proposal: I am asking that the Chanhassen City Council pay for eight
trees, soil and mulch. I will coordinate the work crews, composed of Scouts from Troop
409, neighbors from around the park, and other interested helpers. The crews will dig the
holes, plant the trees, and mulch them. I am asking that the city water the trees, and we
will coordinate watering with neighborhood residents as well.
I would also like to install two benches at Curry Farms Park. The benches are
about $350 each. I will work with the city to order benches that match the existing
playground equipment. I will organize work crews to assemble the benches, transport
them to the park, and install them on concrete pads poured by the city. I am asking that
the city cover the cost of one bench. To cover the cost of the other bench, I will use
grants from some other organizations, plus my own fundraising.
We will have adult leaders on hand at all times to supervise the project. We also
have the necessary equipment to attach the benches to the pads. I would like to plant the
trees and install the benches in late September or in early October.
I feel that my project will add comfort and beauty to the park. I hope to begin
working with you soon. Thank you for your consideration.
