Todd - Thanks for your patience in my formal written response to your request. I know we had a good phone conversation a few weeks back. CCHA would support the addition of a new sheet of outdoor ice in Chanhassen. Our association numbers continue to grow-this year we have 700 players in the association made up of both boys and girls ages 5 to 15. It is our largest registration level in the past 5 years. Our growth is driven by a combination of a great on-ice product- kids like playing hockey- plus community grown mostly in the Chanhassen and Victoria area with new housing developments picking up. With additional development along the 212 corridor and some of the new housing on the south side of Chanhassen, I could see even more growth in the next few years. Over the past few years we have been fortunate to have good outdoor ice conditions, and our lower level in-house teams (ages 5-8) have made good use of the outdoor ice at both City Center and Community Center rinks. Most midweek nights we have teams skating outdoors from when you get ice down until end of February. Midweek indoor ice is at a premium due to the 3 high schools with 10 varsity and junior varsity teams that practice after school and play midweek games. If we had access to more outdoor ice we would likely schedule some of our upper level competitive teams to have some outdoor practices to supplement the indoor ice they get midweek. We currently have 10 teams at the 9-10 year old level, which is the next level up from the teams that currently utilize the outdoor ice. If we scheduled each of these teams for 1 hour of outdoor ice a week that would be 10 additional hours of outdoor ice that we could utilize Monday- Friday. Beyond the use of outdoor rinks for our formal practices, community rinks are important to the culture of outdoor winter recreation in Minnesota. Many young skaters learn to skate on ponds, backyard rinks or at the neighborhood community rink before they come to us to play hockey. Neighborhood kids get together after school and on the weekends to meet at the rink to play pick up hockey games and help develop less structured skills. Ask any 40-something dad who played hockey in Minnesota and they will share fond memories of days at the community rink playing with friends. Please let me know if there is anything else we can provide to help support this important community recreation development. Brian Hegarty President, CCHA
