Installing a Sprinkler System at the West Fire Station
Staffhas received several calls over the years from residents living near the West
Fire Station regarding the weeds and poor condition of the lawn around the fire
station. Each year the Park Maintenance Department sprays this area and re-seeds
the bare spots. Howevert these areas never get established due to the amount of
snow, sand, and salt that is piled on the grass each winter in order to keep the
driveway open for fire and 24-hour ambulance services.
To properly maintain this area for the long termt staff recommends that an
automatic sprinkler system be installed. By adding this system, we can ensure that
the seeded area will germinate with a regulated water system.
We have reviewed other optionst such as installing landscape rock and bushes;
however, because of the size of this areat staff felt it would not be attractive to the
residents driving by the station every day (an example is a home along Lake Lucy
that rocked the entire back yard!).
The estimate to install the system is $4,800.
RECOMMENDATION
Staff recommends that the city council authorize installation of an automatic
sprinkler system at the West Fire Station in the amount of $4,800 to be paid out of
the city council contingency fund.
